{"id":31960,"date":"2018-07-11T19:39:00","date_gmt":"2018-07-11T19:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/321878"},"modified":"2018-07-11T19:39:00","modified_gmt":"2018-07-11T19:39:00","slug":"runescape-generates-800m-in-lifetime-revenue-during-its-17-years-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2018\/07\/11\/runescape-generates-800m-in-lifetime-revenue-during-its-17-years-online\/","title":{"rendered":"RuneScape generates $800M in lifetime revenue during its 17 years online"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Speaking at the Develop: Brighton conference earlier today, Jagex\u00a0CEO Phil Mansell\u00a0reveals\u00a0that the Fantasy MMO <em>RuneScape<\/em> has generated over $800 million in lifetime revenue during\u00a0its 17 years of being online.<\/p>\n<p>As reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pocketgamer.biz\/news\/68549\/runescape-generates-more-than-800-million-in-lifetime-revenue\/\">by Pocket Gamer<\/a>, Mansell\u00a0claims the MMO has garnered\u00a0250 million player accounts and is still experiencing consistent user growth, thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/314420\/Video_How_Runescape_never_missed_an_update.php\">pushing regular support for\u00a0the game<\/a> and being active with the community.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe realised players might come for the game but they\u2019re staying for the community,\u201d he explains, sharing that the average\u00a0active player lifetime is over seven years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s assumed the revenue accounts for\u00a0all iterations of <em>RuneScape<\/em> including <em>RuneScape Classic<\/em>, the original variant published in\u00a02001(which\u00a0will be shutting down in August), Modern <em>RuneScape<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Old School RuneScape<\/em>, an evolving snapshot of the 2007 online game.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While Jagex will be shutting down <em>RuneScape Classic<\/em>, the developer will continue to support <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/287877\/Why_Jagex_maintains_two_legacy_versions_of_RuneScape.php\">Old S<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/287877\/Why_Jagex_maintains_two_legacy_versions_of_RuneScape.php\">chool<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/287877\/Why_Jagex_maintains_two_legacy_versions_of_RuneScape.php\"> and Modern<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/287877\/Why_Jagex_maintains_two_legacy_versions_of_RuneScape.php\">\u00a0<\/a>versions of the game, with Old School <em>RuneScape<\/em> recently being\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/pressreleases\/321513\/Old_School_RuneScape_Mobile_enters_members_beta_and_every_RuneScape_and_Old_School_member_is_going_to_get_access.php\">released\u00a0in open beta on Android mobile devices.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Speaking at the Develop: Brighton conference earlier today, Jagex\u00a0CEO Phil Mansell\u00a0reveals\u00a0that the Fantasy MMO RuneScape has generated over $800 million in lifetime revenue during\u00a0its 17 years of being online.
