However, as a digital-only affair (no, the collector&#8217;s edition with a download code doesn&#8217;t count) it felt very much like a &#8216;bonus&#8217; release alongside 2017&#8217;s<em>\u00a0full-fat<\/em> Sonic outing: the much-maligned <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/sonic_forces\"><strong>Sonic Forces<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fans called for some kind of physical release for Sonic Mania &#8211; which was perhaps the best Sonic offering in recent memory and has sold <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2018\/04\/sonic_mania_has_sold_one_million_units_worldwide_plus_version_release_date_confirmed\">over a million copies<\/a> &#8211; and thankfully, Sega listened. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/sonic_mania_plus\">Sonic Mania Plus<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0launches next week and it&#8217;s the version of Sonic Mania we <em>really<\/em> should have gotten at launch.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gallery\">\n<div class=\"col\"><a href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/news\/2018\/07\/gallery_sonic_mania_plus_is_the_version_of_sonic_mania_youve_wanted_from_the_start\/attachment\/9\/original.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/news\/2018\/07\/gallery_sonic_mania_plus_is_the_version_of_sonic_mania_youve_wanted_from_the_start\/attachment\/9\/445x245.jpg\" width=\"445\" height=\"245\" alt=\"IMG_8070.JPG\"\/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/news\/2018\/07\/gallery_sonic_mania_plus_is_the_version_of_sonic_mania_youve_wanted_from_the_start\/attachment\/2\/original.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/news\/2018\/07\/gallery_sonic_mania_plus_is_the_version_of_sonic_mania_youve_wanted_from_the_start\/attachment\/2\/445x245.jpg\" width=\"445\" height=\"245\" alt=\"IMG_8063.JPG\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"col\"><a href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/news\/2018\/07\/gallery_sonic_mania_plus_is_the_version_of_sonic_mania_youve_wanted_from_the_start\/attachment\/3\/original.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/news\/2018\/07\/gallery_sonic_mania_plus_is_the_version_of_sonic_mania_youve_wanted_from_the_start\/attachment\/3\/445x245.jpg\" width=\"445\" height=\"245\" alt=\"IMG_8064.JPG\"\/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/news\/2018\/07\/gallery_sonic_mania_plus_is_the_version_of_sonic_mania_youve_wanted_from_the_start\/attachment\/4\/original.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/news\/2018\/07\/gallery_sonic_mania_plus_is_the_version_of_sonic_mania_youve_wanted_from_the_start\/attachment\/4\/445x245.jpg\" width=\"445\" height=\"245\" alt=\"IMG_8065.JPG\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>First things first, let&#8217;s talk about the packaging. Sonic Mania Plus comes in a cardboard slipcase which has a lovely holographic foil effect; inside this, you&#8217;ll find the standard Switch game case (which has a reversible sleeve inside showing a Genesis-style cover) and a surprisingly lavish 32-page art book containing concept and final artwork from the game itself (check out those logo ideas).<\/p>\n<p>Then there&#8217;s Sonic Mania Plus <em>the game<\/em> &#8211;\u00a0Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel are included as playable characters, and there&#8217;s a remixed &#8220;Encore Mode&#8221;, a four-player competition mode (ideal for when you&#8217;ve got a few friends round) and a few extra cutscenes. Oh, and the battle with Metal Sonic has been retooled to closely resemble the one seen in the oft-ignored 32X title <strong>Knuckles&#8217; Chaotix<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"picture strip\">\n<div class=\"img\"><a href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/news\/2018\/07\/gallery_sonic_mania_plus_is_the_version_of_sonic_mania_youve_wanted_from_the_start\/attachment\/1\/original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/news\/2018\/07\/gallery_sonic_mania_plus_is_the_version_of_sonic_mania_youve_wanted_from_the_start\/attachment\/1\/900x.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8062.JPG\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>If you already own Sonic Mania then inserting the game card will simply add the &#8216;Plus&#8217; content to your existing game data, which is seamless and rather lovely; instead of creating an entirely new game icon on your Switch home screen, it simply uses the existing Sonic Mania one. Nice.<\/p>\n<p>Is Sonic Mania Plus worth buying if you already own the original game? Depends how badly you want that physical case sitting on your shelf, we guess.
