{"id":257,"date":"2017-09-22T15:32:00","date_gmt":"2017-09-22T15:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/306323"},"modified":"2017-09-22T15:32:00","modified_gmt":"2017-09-22T15:32:00","slug":"bluehole-hits-out-at-epic-for-replicating-battlegrounds-in-fortnite","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2017\/09\/22\/bluehole-hits-out-at-epic-for-replicating-battlegrounds-in-fortnite\/","title":{"rendered":"Bluehole hits out at Epic for &#8216;replicating&#8217; Battlegrounds in Fortnite"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Epic Games has managed to rile up <em>PlayerUnknown&#8217;s Battlegrounds<\/em> developer Bluehole by announcing a new battle royale mode for its own game, <em>Fortnite<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It might&#8217;ve seemed like a relatively innocuous reveal, but the South Korean studio isn&#8217;t happy at all.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a press release fired out\u00a0this morning, Bluehole vice president\u00a0Chang Hang Kim expressed frustration at Epic Games &#8212; which incidentally creates the\u00a0Unreal Engine 4 that powers <em>Battlegrounds\u00a0&#8212;<\/em>\u00a0for\u00a0endorsing\u00a0<em>Fortnite&#8217;s<\/em> new mode.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve had an ongoing relationship with Epic Games throughout <em>Battlegrounds&#8217;<\/em> development as they are the creators of UE4, the engine we licensed for the game,&#8221;\u00a0he explained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After listening to the growing feedback from our community and reviewing the gameplay for ourselves, we are concerned that <em>Fortnite<\/em> may be replicating the experience for which <em>Battlegrounds<\/em>\u00a0is known.<\/p>\n<p>Hang Kim\u00a0also seems irritated by the fact that Epic cites <em>Battlegrounds<\/em> as the inspiration behind\u00a0<em>Fortnite: Battle Royale<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yeah, we made a PvP mode for <em>Fortnite<\/em>. We love battle royale games like <em>Battlegrounds<\/em>\u00a0and thought <em>Fortnite<\/em> would make a great foundation for our own version,&#8221; wrote Epic&#8217;s worldwide creative director Donald Mustard in a post on the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.us.playstation.com\/2017\/09\/12\/fortnite-battle-royale-launches-september-26\/\">PlayStation blog<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a comparison that&#8217;s clearly upset Bluehole, which claims the statement\u00a0&#8220;was never discussed with us, and we don&#8217;t feel that it&#8217;s right.&#8221;\u00a0The studio added it may take &#8220;futher action,&#8221; but it&#8217;s unclear what that means, and where it\u00a0would\u00a0stand legally if it chose that route.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After all, it&#8217;s worth remembering that PlayerUnknown himself, Brendan Greene, cut his teeth working on battle royale mods and modes for other titles like <em>ARMA<\/em>\u00a0<em>2<\/em>\u00a0and <em>H1Z1<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>You can compare the two titles for yourself by checking out the <em>Fortnite: Battle Royale<\/em> trailer at the top of the page.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Epic Games has managed to rile up PlayerUnknown&#8217;s Battlegrounds developer Bluehole by announcing a new battle royale mode for its own game, Fortnite.
