{"id":21385,"date":"2018-05-23T22:13:00","date_gmt":"2018-05-23T22:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/318726"},"modified":"2018-05-23T22:13:00","modified_gmt":"2018-05-23T22:13:00","slug":"the-future-of-playstation-may-be-portable-says-sony-exec","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2018\/05\/23\/the-future-of-playstation-may-be-portable-says-sony-exec\/","title":{"rendered":"The future of PlayStation may be portable, says Sony exec"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Off the heels of the news that the next PlayStation might be <a href=\"http:\/\/gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/318673\/Sony_The_next_PlayStation_is_another_three_years_away.php\">as little as three years away<\/a>, Sony&#8217;s new PlayStation chief John Kodera has hinted at the possibility of Sony re-entering the portable games market, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-05-23\/sony-s-new-playstation-chief-hints-at-portable-gaming-revival\">according to a report in Bloomberg news.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>What that portable game console might look like is still shrouded in secrecy, but it appears that Sony&#8217;s upper management has shifted its stance from Andrew House&#8217;s analysis of the portable games market last September. At the time, House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/306495\/Sony_doesnt_see_huge_demand_for_portable_consoles.php\">said Sony would not be chasing the success of the Nintendo Switch<\/a>, because he didn&#8217;t see an &#8220;opportunity&#8221; for portable video game platforms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Whether it&#8217;s the profits of the Switch or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/299889\/Sony_takes_a_page_from_Jackbox_with_PlayLink_mobile_input_tech.php\">rollout of PlayStation&#8217;s PlayLink technology,<\/a> Kodera&#8217;s interest seems to indicate that console PlayStation games may have some mobile format or interactivity in the future.<\/p>\n<p>At a roundtable interview attended by Bloomberg on Wednesday, Kodera stated that in his opinion, &#8220;rather than separating portable gaming from consoles, it\u2019s necessary to continue thinking of [portable gaming] as one method to deliver more gaming experiences and exploring what our customers want from portable. We want to think about many options.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the struggling success of PlayStation&#8217;s previous mobile efforts, its indie support team has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/300851\/For_indie_devs_the_Vitas_niche_audience_is_what_makes_it_a_viable_platform.php\">won fans among developers<\/a> for shepherding independent games onto the PlayStation Vita.\u00a0Those games buoyed a platform that, while not seeing blockbuster success, created an expectation for indie developers that their console and PC-focused games might be enjoyable on the go.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Off the heels of the news that the next PlayStation might be as little as three years away, Sony&#8217;s new PlayStation chief John Kodera has hinted at the possibility of Sony re-entering the portable games market, according to a report in Bloomberg news.
