{"id":20225,"date":"2018-05-11T23:50:00","date_gmt":"2018-05-11T23:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/318016"},"modified":"2018-05-11T23:50:00","modified_gmt":"2018-05-11T23:50:00","slug":"japanese-devs-reflect-on-the-recent-renaissance-of-japanese-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2018\/05\/11\/japanese-devs-reflect-on-the-recent-renaissance-of-japanese-games\/","title":{"rendered":"Japanese devs reflect on the recent renaissance of Japanese games"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote readability=\"8\">\n<p><em><strong>&#8220;Thinking back on the last couple of years, there were [so] many smartphone games, that it seemed people had forgotten about the artistic or high-definition games.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>&#8211; Veteran game dev Tetsuya Mizuguchi, speaking about the recent history of the Japanese game industry.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Japan has long played host to a vibrant game industry, but in the past two years it seems devs in the region have had a string of international hits, ranging from\u00a0<em>Persona 5<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Nioh\u00a0<\/em>to\u00a0<em>Nier: Automata, Resident Evil 7\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Breath of the Wild<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the premise of &#8220;Ebb and Flow&#8221;, a\u00a0new documentary published on YouTube this week by Archipel (the folks behind the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/280415\/Watch_Japanese_game_devs_explore_the_places_that_inspire_them.php\">Toco<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/280415\/Watch_Japanese_game_devs_explore_the_places_that_inspire_them.php\">Toco<\/a>\u00a0series of videos profiling notable Japanese creators) that aims to explore the past, present and future of Japanese game dev.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re at all curious about the topic this\u00a0is well worth a watch, as it features conversations with everyone from\u00a0<em>Rez\u00a0<\/em>creator Tetsuya\u00a0Mizuguchi\u00a0to\u00a0<em>Yakuza\u00a0<\/em>series frontman\u00a0Toshihiro Nagoshi\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Nier: Automata\u00a0<\/em>director Yoko Taro about why\u00a0the Japanese game industry is changing, and how Japanese devs work differently than some of their counterparts abroad.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The development environment in the West is more systemic than it is in Japan,&#8221; says Taro (via English\u00a0subtitles) at one point. &#8220;Every job is clearly assigned, middleware is streamlined, and everyone has learned how to use it. Level designers know exactly what they need to do. It&#8217;s designed in a way to curb trouble from occurring.
