{"id":14695,"date":"2018-03-10T00:18:00","date_gmt":"2018-03-10T00:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/315408"},"modified":"2018-03-10T00:18:00","modified_gmt":"2018-03-10T00:18:00","slug":"now-you-can-muck-around-with-the-build-engine-successor-build2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2018\/03\/10\/now-you-can-muck-around-with-the-build-engine-successor-build2\/","title":{"rendered":"Now you can muck around with the Build engine successor: Build2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Roughly twelve years after he started working on it, Build engine creator\u00a0Ken Silverman has published a working version of its unfinished successor:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/advsys.net\/ken\/buildsrc\/build2.htm\">Build2<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is a big deal given what an impact games built on the original Build engine (including\u00a0<em>Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, Blood<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>William Shatner&#8217;s TekWar<\/em>) had on the game industry in the &#8217;90s.<\/p>\n<p>Now, devs can get an idea of what Build2\u00a0games might have looked like &#8212; and how things might have gone differently if Silverman had seen the project through. He&#8217;s published a build of the engine that anyone can <a href=\"http:\/\/advsys.net\/ken\/buildsrc\/build2.htm\">download from his website<\/a>, along with an editor and some script samples.<\/p>\n<p>Also, YouTuber CuteFloor published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3qtmkkdND6M\">video<\/a> (embedded above) which affords you a visual walkthrough of the engine and what it can do.<\/p>\n<p>According to Silverman, he started working on Build2\u00a0in the summer of 2006, and actually brought it to a summer camp in 2007 to A) teach kids how to make 3D games and B) get some hands-on feedback. This\u00a0continued for another two years until enrollment dropped off at the camp, and Silverman apparently lost interest.<\/p>\n<p>His decision to now share it online comes not long after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/315085\/3D_Realms_resurrects_22_year_old_Build_engine_for_Ion_Maiden.php\">3D Realms resurrected Silverman&#8217;s Build engine<\/a> by releasing a playable preview of\u00a0<em>Ion Maiden<\/em>, a new game being developed by Voidpoint\u00a0on the original &#8217;90s engine.<\/p>\n<p>FUN FACT: There&#8217;s a bunch of other interesting odds and ends on Silverman&#8217;s website, including <a href=\"http:\/\/advsys.net\/ken\/buildsrc\/default.htm#kenvex\">KenVex<\/a>, a\u00a0failed second successor to Build that Silverman also published online this week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Roughly twelve years after he started working on it, Build engine creator\u00a0Ken Silverman has published a working version of its unfinished successor:\u00a0Build2.\u00a0 This is a big deal given what an impact games built on the original Build engine (including\u00a0Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, Blood, and\u00a0William Shatner&#8217;s TekWar) had on the game industry in the &#8217;90s.
