{"id":13785,"date":"2018-02-26T23:45:00","date_gmt":"2018-02-26T23:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/315014"},"modified":"2018-02-26T23:45:00","modified_gmt":"2018-02-26T23:45:00","slug":"toys-of-the-future-will-be-designed-for-augmented-reality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2018\/02\/26\/toys-of-the-future-will-be-designed-for-augmented-reality\/","title":{"rendered":"Toys of the future will be designed for augmented reality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/ar-toys-the-future-of-play\/\">As reported by Wired<\/a>, toy companies have revealed new products utilizing augmented reality during the New York Toy Fair last week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With the rise of AR apps and games, companies like Hasbro and Mattel are following suit by utilizing the same technology in their toys.<\/p>\n<p>Whether AR is integrated with\u00a0stuffed animals or board games, all it takes is a smartphone to access the tech.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As co-founder of Merge (a company specializing in VR\/AR\u00a0content\u00a0for kids) Andrew Trickett <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/ar-toys-the-future-of-play\/\">explains\u00a0to Wired<\/a>, AR demands less hardware than a traditional VR headset.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, Merge developed its 6DoF Blaster which uses a smartphone to create digital targets kids can run around and shoot at, akin to playing laser tag.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The appeal in AR toys\u00a0lie in having kids\u00a0be active and mobile, as opposed to glued to a television.<\/p>\n<p>This has prompted\u00a0companies to start designing AR gadgets that merge the physical with the virtual, from AR integrated picture books to puzzles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s a certain satisfaction with touching something and physically manipulating it.
