And not just any hardware &#8211; the follow-up to Nintendo&#8217;s best-selling console of all time.<\/p>\n<p>With all the games and everything that&#8217;s happened in the last 365 days, today we&#8217;re looking back, recapping the big games from the last 12 months, and asking you lovely people how you&#8217;d rate Switch 2 after a full calendar year. If <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/mario-kart-world\">Mario Kart World<\/a> didn&#8217;t grab you and you&#8217;d played the other games elsewhere, though, you&#8217;d be forgiven for feeling underwhelmed.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the breadth and quality were undeniable, and Nintendo-only gamers were spoiled for choice: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/street-fighter-6-years-1-2-fighters-edition\">Street Fighter 6<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/cyberpunk-2077-ultimate-edition\">Cyberpunk 2077<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/yakuza-0-directors-cut\">Yakuza 0<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/split-fiction\">Split Fiction<\/a> &#8211; all excellent video games that perform well on S2, day one.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/fast-fusion\">Fast Fusion<\/a> brought some system-exclusive racing, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/legend-of-zelda-breath-of-the-wild-nintendo-switch-2-edition\">BOTW<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/legend-of-zelda-tears-of-the-kingdom-nintendo-switch-2-edition\">TOTK<\/a> at 60fps led the charge on the Switch 2 Edition front. A decent spread of upgrades from the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/deltarune\">Deltarune<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/no-mans-sky-nintendo-switch-2-edition\">No Man&#8217;s Sky<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/switch-eshop\/fantasy_life_i_the_girl_who_steals_time\">Fantasy Life i<\/a>, and others showcased an impressively diverse, if familiar, lineup. July also continued the trend of stupidly long Switch 2 Edition names, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/super-mario-party-jamboree-nintendo-switch-2-edition-plus-jamboree-tv\">Super Mario Party Jamboree &#8211; Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV<\/a> bookending the first-party offerings at the end of the month.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, we got <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/wild-hearts-s\">Wild Hearts S<\/a> (remember that?), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/wwe-2k25\">WWE 2K25<\/a>, and the system&#8217;s first real turkey in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/tamagotchi-plaza-nintendo-switch-2-edition\">Tamagotchi Plaza &#8211; Nintendo Switch 2 Edition<\/a>, an NL <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/reviews\/nintendo-switch-2\/tamagotchi-plaza-nintendo-switch-2-edition\">3\/10<\/a>-er. <em>Ouch.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Despite indie dev talk that S2 devkits were like hen&#8217;s teeth for most, we started seeing some tiny games hitting the Switch 2 eShop &#8211; specifically, games which pushed system features Nintendo was keen to highlight, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/handy-hockey\">Handy Hockey<\/a> (Mouse Mode) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/chillin-by-the-fire\">Chillin&#8217; by the Fire<\/a> (GameChat).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hot topics:<\/strong> Nintendo restricting dev-kit access, Odyssey vs. Bananza, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2025\/07\/nintendo-announces-first-cast-members-for-the-legend-of-zelda-movie\">Zelda movie casting<\/a><br \/><strong>NL&#8217;s Highest-Rated Game(s) of the Month:<\/strong> Donkey Kong Bananza (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/reviews\/nintendo-switch-2\/donkey-kong-bananza\">9<\/a>) \/ Super Mario Party Jamboree NS2E (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/reviews\/nintendo-switch-2\/super-mario-party-jamboree-nintendo-switch-2-edition-plus-jamboree-tv\">9<\/a>)<\/p>\n<aside class=\"second-opinion\">\n<h2 class=\"heading\" data-toc=\"skip\">A love that has only increased<\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I was very much in love with my Switch 2 one year ago, and it&#8217;s a love that has only increased in the 12 months since.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s true, the release cadence might not have been <em>quite<\/em> as wall-to-wall banger as some were hoping for, but Bananza was sublime, Pokopia was the best Pok\u00e9mon game in yonks, and Age of Imprisonment finally got me into Warriors. Elsewhere, a titan of ball sports returned to a Nintendo platform in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/ea-sports-madden-nfl-26\">Madden 26<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/story-of-seasons-grand-bazaar-nintendo-switch-2-edition\">Story of Seasons Grand Bazaar<\/a> brought cosy farm-sim vibes, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/bokura-planet\">Bokura: Planet<\/a> continued the trend of indie releases that showcased the system&#8217;s features getting waved through.<\/p>\n<p>Also, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/kirby-and-the-forgotten-land-nintendo-switch-2-edition-plus-star-crossed-world\">Kirby and the Forgotten Land &#8211; Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World<\/a> made former Nintendo Power podcast presenters thankful that the pod wrapped a few years back and they <em>don&#8217;t<\/em> have to repeat that ludicrous title in full. Every. Time. As much as I enjoyed the original Switch, it always felt a little behind the curve \u2014 in terms of power, build quality, and outside of indies, third-party offerings \u2014 so by these metrics alone, the successor feels like a real step up.<\/p>\n<p>As for software, I understand how the lack of a new Mario and Zelda could make the first year feel underwhelming, but Mario Kart World, DK Bananza, Pok\u00e9mon Legends: Z-A, Pokopia, and even my beloved Metroid Prime 4: Beyond alone have, in my eyes, made for a stonking first year. That&#8217;s how I felt after a few months, and that&#8217;s still largely how I feel.<\/p>\n<p>The variety we&#8217;ve had over the past year is pretty impressive, even if I haven&#8217;t been interested in many. But all of them are chaotic and fun in different ways, belying the hardware&#8217;s more muted look. There are maybe a few too many Switch 2 Editions, and until Pokopia I wasn&#8217;t readily recommending the console, but Switch 2, like Switch 1, is really just an indie machine to me &#8211; a more powerful one.<\/p>\n<p>Which is great! And if you&#8217;re someone who <em>only<\/em> had a Switch 1, then the wider array of third-party ports is hugely impressive. We were extremely lucky with 2017&#8217;s release slate, so I can&#8217;t be too disappointed. even if the design is more of the same.<\/p>\n<p>As for the software library a year into its life, I&#8217;m not sure where to start, as there have been so many top-tier releases. Although the first-party exclusives so far might not match Breath of the Wild, I still find myself playing Mario Kart World regularly. I&#8217;ve also enjoyed Bananza, and Pokopia in my books is a worthy exclusive, with no apparent technical compromises.<\/p>\n<p>As for the third-party content, it&#8217;s been an outstanding run. Sure, we&#8217;re playing catch-up in a lot of cases, but we&#8217;ve finally got a Nintendo platform that can handle Cyberpunk. Becoming Metacritic&#8217;s highest-rated Pok\u00e9mon game of all time, Nintendo is bundling this system-exclusive with the console this summer. Beyond that, there&#8217;s a significant pile of &#8220;TBA 2026&#8221; titles, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/fire-emblem-fortunes-weave\">Fire Emblem: Fortune&#8217;s Weave<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/duskbloods\">The Duskbloods<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/professor-layton-and-the-new-world-of-steam\">Layton and the New World of Steam<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/elder-scrolls-iv-oblivion-remastered\">Oblivion Remastered<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/decapolice\">DECAPOLICE<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch-2\/valheim\">Valheim<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And then there&#8217;s whatever Nintendo has up its sleeve for the holidays. Fire Emblem is excellent, but it&#8217;s also a little niche.
