It\u2019s a refreshingly original experience that more than deserves a place in any Switch owner\u2019s library.<\/p>\n<p>Difficult, frenetic gameplay, strong art direction, and an even stronger jazz drum soundtrack make this the sort of memorable game that you\u2019ll likely keep coming back to over and over for another few runs in arcade mode. Although you could argue its similarity to one or two recent releases, it trumps the competition with incredibly slick combat, simple and satisfying progression, and varied environments and enemies.<\/p>\n<p>The difficulty ramps up heavily as you progress to the later levels, so the inability to change difficulty on the fly may prove a bit of an issue for some players. It utterly nails what it sets out to do, providing an instantly accessible, satisfying, and addictive gameplay loop that anybody can grasp.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s an immensely enjoyable experience from the start, but as you get deeper in, there&#8217;s really nothing else quite like it. It looks and runs great on the Switch, with only a couple of really minuscule interface issues which are easily ignored.<\/p>\n<p>At roughly eight or nine hours, the story is surprisingly lengthy, but we were never bored and wanted to investigate every little thing just to wring out more precious droplets of banter and fascination. The characters and their travails are rich and likeable, the game\u2019s sense of humour is generally inspired, and it\u2019s all very sweet without being <em>sugary-twee<\/em> and talking down to the player. It\u2019s also an affecting little tearjerker that will definitely strike a chord if you make art, and almost certainly will even if you don\u2019t \u2013 so long as you\u2019re capable of pretty basic empathy.<\/p>\n<p>Chicory is simple to play but impressively long and complex, with perfect controls, performance and visuals. Throw yourself into painting the world and you\u2019ll be left with a game that\u2019s very much your own and speaks to you directly \u2013 a beautiful marriage of mechanics, themes and visuals.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"list-item\">\n<aside class=\"list-hero\" data-subject=\"games\/switch-eshop\/cuphead\">\n<div class=\"scanlines-before\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/e93460d4eb1df\/cuphead-artwork.900x250.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"250\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Cuphead (Switch eShop)\"><\/div>\n<p><a class=\"cover scanlines\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/switch-eshop\/cuphead\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/03b8fc1926726\/cuphead-cover.cover_small.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Cuphead (Switch eShop)\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"list-hero-info\">\n<p><span>Publisher: <\/span><strong>StudioMDHR<\/strong> \/ <span>Developer: <\/span><strong>StudioMDHR<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"release\"><span>Release Date: <\/span><strong>18th Apr 2019 (<abbr title=\"United States \/ North America\">USA<\/abbr>)<\/strong> \/ <strong>18th Apr 2019 (<abbr title=\"UK \/ European\">UK\/EU<\/abbr>)<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<aside class=\"picture embed pictures\" id=\"screenshots\"><\/aside>\n<p><strong>$13.99<\/strong> \/ <del>19.99<\/del><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/switch-eshop\/cuphead\">Cuphead<\/a> was an absolute masterpiece when it originally launched on Xbox One and nothing was sacrificed in its move to the Switch.<\/p>\n<p>A run-and-gun boss battler dressed up like a 1930s Fleischer or Disney animated short, it\u2019s the same visually jaw-dropping, aurally delightful, knuckle-whiteningly difficult game it was on Microsoft\u2019s console and the Switch\u2019s library is all the better for its presence. Its focus on intense boss battles won\u2019t be to everyone\u2019s tastes, but as long as you know what you\u2019re getting yourself into, we can\u2019t recommend it enough.
