Over the years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2024\/11\/the-legend-of-zelda-echoes-of-wisdom-has-been-added-to-the-official-timeline\">timelines<\/a> have been debated, settled, shaken up, or outright ignored. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/features\/talking-point-do-you-play-zelda-games-for-the-story\">Storylines<\/a> have been contested, shredded apart, put on a pedestal. But nothing, not even recovering the Triforce, is more important than making sure Link is holding his sword in the right hand.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8216;Right? You mean left, right?&#8217;<\/em> Okay, perhaps &#8216;correct&#8217; is the <del>right<\/del> better term.<\/p>\n<p>Upon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nes\/legend_of_zelda\">his debut in 1986<\/a>, our favourite green tunic-donning hero wielded his sword in his left hand and his shield in his right. And in <a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendo.co.jp\/clv\/manuals\/en\/pdf\/CLV-P-NAASE.pdf\">the North American manual<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nes\/zelda_ii_the_adventure_of_link\">Zelda II: The Adventure of Link<\/a>, it even states: &#8220;Then, with a magical sword in his left hand and a magical shield in his right, he set off alone on his long travels.&#8221; And the <a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zeldadungeon.net\/hyrule-historia-explains-why-link-is-a-lefty\/\">Hyrule Historia touches on why<\/a> Link is (largely) left-handed, stating on page 138 that:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Link was depicted in early art examples as right handed. However, in order to aid in the creation of the pixel art and for the purposes of configuration in game screens, he was altered to be left handed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure class=\"picture\" data-uuid=\"1034774a7087d\"><a class=\"scanlines\" title=\"Link Lefty\" href=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/1034774a7087d\/link-lefty.large.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/1034774a7087d\/link-lefty.900x.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Link Lefty\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption\"><em class=\"credit\"><span class><\/span> Image: Nintendo Life \/ Dark Horse<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Pretty definitive, right? Well, no.<\/p>\n<p>Things have changed, and Link has proven himself to be a little more ambidextrous over the past 20 years. Some whippersnappers out there might not have even seen Link wield his sword in his left hand at all, but I promise, it was that way for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, the debate over Link&#8217;s dominant hand crept up after the upcoming <strong>Legend of Zelda<\/strong> movie&#8217;s Director of Photography shared (and promptly deleted) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2026\/04\/we-might-have-just-got-our-best-look-at-link-in-the-legend-of-zelda-movie\">a clipboard with what looks to be our best look at Link yet<\/a>, played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, in the full green tunic and the Master Sword in his right hand. *gasp*<\/p>\n<p>So, what&#8217;s the story behind Link&#8217;s hand-swapping mastery? Is it <em>really<\/em> a case of inconsistency, or is Link just ridiculously talented and can defeat Ganon with whatever hand he pleases?<\/p>\n<p><!-- cache: html:nintendolife.com\/ssl\/zelda\/related-articles:200082 @ 1777437717 --><\/p>\n<aside class=\"block object-related\"> <\/aside>\n<h3>So, is Link a lefty or a righty?<\/h3>\n<p>As you&#8217;ll see, it depends on the game!<\/p>\n<p>For a long time, Link held his sword in his left hand. The very first game to break that pattern was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/wii\/legend_of_zelda_twilight_princess\">Twilight Princess<\/a>, but <em>only<\/em> the Wii release (we&#8217;ll get into the reason in a moment). Since then, he&#8217;s swapped between the two. But as recently as 2023, <a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendo.com\/au\/news-and-articles\/get-to-know-link-and-his-many-adventures\/?srsltid=AfmBOora45O3mHYMgYpnx3pfdKbvUgbAUiHS_UDJXx9T2Y1UDUORqJs_\">Nintendo has said<\/a> that &#8220;Link is left-handed\u2026mostly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Link has been in a <em>lot<\/em> of video games, but for this table, we&#8217;re going to stick to the Zelda series itself. No <strong>Smash Bros.<\/strong> \u2014 though, if you&#8217;re curious, he&#8217;s left-handed in every game <em>except<\/em> his adult version in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/super_smash_bros_ultimate\">Smash Ultimate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And, you&#8217;ll see below that are <em>many<\/em> games where Link is left-handed. (Well, unless you&#8217;re someone who thinks the shield should be held in the dominant hand, in which case, swap that around. More power to you!)<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re going by official art, Link&#8217;s in-game model, and by Link&#8217;s front-facing sprite where appropriate. With the majority of players favouring their right hand, Nintendo decided to flip everything.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, there was still fan demand to keep things faithful: &#8220;I think that was the best solution, but even looking at this one point, there were people who said they thought Link should still hold the sword in his left hand.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>(When Twilight Princess was remastered in HD on Wii U, the original GameCube orientation was used, so Link was once again a lefty.)<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gallery\">\n<div class=\"cols cols-2\">\n<div class=\"col col-1 col-width-50\"><a title=\"A little swapsies...\" class=\"scanlines\" href=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/c615bbde783de\/a-little-swapsies.large.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/c615bbde783de\/a-little-swapsies.445x333.jpg\" width=\"445\" height=\"333\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A little swapsies...\"><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"col col-1 col-width-50\"><a title=\"A little swapsies...\" class=\"scanlines scanlines\" href=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/0e93bacc0d4dd\/a-little-swapsies.large.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/0e93bacc0d4dd\/a-little-swapsies.445x333.jpg\" width=\"445\" height=\"333\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A little swapsies...\"><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"caption\">A little swapsies&#8230; \u2014 <em class=\"credit\"><span class><\/span> Images: Zion Grassl \/ Nintendo Life<\/em><\/figcaption><\/aside>\n<p>That right-handed decision stuck for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/wii\/legend_of_zelda_skyward_sword\">Skyward Sword<\/a> for similar reasons (remember Wii Motion Plus?), but Breath of the Wild and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/legend_of_zelda_tears_of_the_kingdom\">Tears of the Kingdom<\/a> have stuck to adult Link&#8217;s right-handed ways.<\/p>\n<p>Back in 2016, series producer Eiji Aonuma <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jose_otero\/status\/742822320176128000\">told IGN<\/a> and <a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gamespot.com\/articles\/why-zelda-breath-of-the-wilds-link-is-right-handed\/1100-6440870\/\">GameSpot<\/a> explained the decision:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;With the gamepad, the buttons you&#8217;ll be using to swing the sword are on the right side, and thus he&#8217;s right-handed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>To which my response is&#8230; well, that&#8217;s how it&#8217;s <em>always<\/em> been? There. An easy answer, for a series that doesn&#8217;t always have easy answers. I love that.<\/p>\n<h3>Does it really matter?<\/h3>\n<p>Ultimately? No, not really. Link is going to defeat Ganon\/Ganondorf\/Vaati\/Ghirahim\/<em>whoever<\/em>, with whichever hand he&#8217;s using.<\/p>\n<p>But I have to admit, as much as it doesn&#8217;t bother me, there is something unique about having a left-handed hero.<\/p>\n<p>To some, Link being a lefty is a big deal \u2014 there aren&#8217;t many left-handers out there in the video game world. Raphael from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/gamecube\/soulcalibur_ii\">SoulCalibur<\/a>, Sephiroth in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/switch-eshop\/final_fantasy_vii\">Final Fantasy VII<\/a>, and Crono from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/snes\/chrono_trigger\">Chrono Trigger<\/a> are just a few. That means Link is one of the first.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, in motion-controlled games, it might feel a bit weird to have a character swing with his left hand while you&#8217;re using your right; that&#8217;s the kind of thing that would throw me off.
