We got old school with some early Final Fantasy — which have been made to look even more beautiful — relished the GBA vibes of the delightfully reimagined Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp and took to the track in the well-designed but poorly executed Disney Speedstorm.

With all of these high-quality games to play on Switch, we are doing some last-minute cramming before Tears of the Kingdom takes over our lives. Below, a group of our writers have shared their gaming plans for the weekend ahead. Why not have a read of what we are up to and then take to the comments to let us know what’s on your ‘to-play’ list for the coming days?

Ollie Reynolds, Staff Writer

I’ll be diving into Final Fantasy VI this weekend via the new Pixel Remaster release. Granted, it’s probably not the wisest choice with only a few weeks remaining until the launch of Tears of the Kingdom, but hey, I’m silly like that. But that’s really about it for me at the moment; I’m (hopefully) moving house next week, so I’ve got a lot of possessions already packed away in preparation. Have a good weekend!

Alana Hagues, Deputy Editor

This week’s Indie World has reminded me that I need to go back and finish Blasphemous, which is just one of the many games I picked up on sale and tried for an hour or so before getting swept up in life. The sequel looks amazing, and you know I love a good Metroidvania.

In much cosier gaming – I think? – I picked up Final Fantasy III this week. I’ve never played the OG NES version of the game, having only tried the DS remake in 2006, so I want to chip away at this one because I’ve heard better things about the job system in the original version. Those rearranged soundtracks? Sublime.

[embedded content]
Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube

Jim Norman, Staff Writer

This week I decided to finally rip the plaster off and crack on with finishing Fire Emblem Engage. I’m closing in on 45 hours played now and those battles are getting reeeal long, but, miraculously, I am still having a fantastic time with it. There are only a few more chapters to go now then I can finally tick it off the backlog which is increasingly looming over my every waking moment.

In classic Jim form, this backlog has not been enough to stop me from yet another Zelda playthrough, however. I’m heading into Skull Woods now as I keep ploughing through A Link to the Past on my GBA. Whaddagame. Let’s just hope that I can have this one polished off before 12th May…

Liam Doolan, News Reporter

This weekend I’m reliving the Game Boy Advance era with the new Switch release Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp. While Intelligent Systems is better known for Fire Emblem and even other series here in the West nowadays, back in the early 2000s Advance Wars had a loyal following. Some of my best memories of this developer date back to this moment in Nintendo’s history.

I’ve spent a handful of hours in the new game so far, and while I wasn’t too sure about it in the lead-up to release – I can now confirm I’m completely sold. The new character art, the animations, the voiceovers and the 3D graphics really do add an extra level of immersion to this two-in-one pack, so I’ll be spending as much time in the game as I can this weekend. If I get any spare moments, I might return to Pokémon Scarlet or revisit the original Final Fantasy.

Gonçalo Lopes, Reviewer

There are a couple of hidden gems on the eShop this week: Sunrise GP is yet another lovely racer that forgoes textures for flat polygons while Wild Dogs is your dream Contra Game Boy gun & run. Sadly DNF Duel: Who’s Next did not arrive in time for the weekend but the unexpected quick delivery of my Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster physical edition ensures there will be a lot of future grinding for levels on all six games. Everspace 2 continues to dazzle with gorgeous vistas and charismatic characters both new and from the previous game.

Game of the Week is one that sure took its sweet time to deploy but it was well worth the wait. Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is an absolute dream package featuring two of the GBA’s finest with a brilliant new coat of paint and quality voice acting.
