Don\u2019t worry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lady at the ticket office chuckled to herself as her colleagues gave her a knowing smirk. There I was: another clueless westerner, fresh off the plane to Bangkok and bamboozled by\u2026well, everything, to be honest with you.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlrighty then, if you say so!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With (slightly) renewed confidence, I head back to the platform and climb aboard the train for a second time. I squint out of the grubby window to confirm the platform number, and I pore over the information on my ticket for what feels like the fiftieth time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay, I\u2019m in the right place. This is definitely the 10 o\u2019clock to Chiang Mai.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But I still don\u2019t see any beds. My back starts to ache at the prospect of spending the next 14 hours in an upright position. But I keep faith in the ticket lady\u2019s words.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, I prise my eyes away from the impressively plump rat that had been scurrying around the tracks, and I look up to see a train guard sporting an immaculate green uniform, and an equally uptight expression.<\/p>\n<p>He reaches up to the overhead luggage compartment, and, with a turn of the special tool hanging from his neck, reveals\u2026oh, <em>Christ<\/em>. Not a luggage compartment at all, but my bed for the night. It\u2019s like a dinner tray! To further compound my misery, it\u2019s September in Thailand, and the humidity is punishing.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"right\">\n<p>I always said a Switch that couldn\u2019t be docked was a non-starter for me.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Two nights of (very) solid partying at the Mad Monkey hostel ensure that my sleeping pattern is in tatters too, and, as the train pulls away, screeching and bouncing as it goes, I realise that the carriage lights are staying on for the whole journey. It\u2019s going to be a long night.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, I\u2019ve already demolished the Citrus Twist Lay\u2019s (absolutely elite, btw) and double-stuffed Oreos I\u2019d bought for the journey, so I can\u2019t even eat the boredom away. Luckily, I have an ace up my sleeve.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Pre-flight checks<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>You see, a few weeks previous, I had been carrying out last-minute packing rehearsals, and it turns out that cramming your entire life into a 40-litre Osprey backpack doesn\u2019t allow for <em>quite<\/em> as much opulence as you might like.<\/p>\n<p>My \u2018going out\u2019 shoes are the first casualty, but with each zip-seam-busting attempt, it is clear that I am going to have to make some pretty severe cutbacks. Either that or buy a bigger backpack, but honestly, ain\u2019t nobody got time for those checked luggage fees.<\/p>\n<p>So, as I deliberate on which three t-shirts to take and which seven to throw out (I\u2019m <em>new<\/em> to this, <em>alright<\/em>?!) my laptop makes way for a slimmer tablet and mini Bluetooth keyboard. At this point, the weight reduction is becoming a bit of an obsession. I feel like a McLaren engineer.<\/p>\n<p>I unzip the front compartment and see my OG launch Switch and its big, bulky case staring back at me. To my newly-obsessive eyes, it\u2019s monstrously huge. I begrudgingly start to envision nine months (!) without a second playthrough of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/metroid_dread\">Metroid Dread<\/a>, and\u2026actually, you know what? That doesn\u2019t seem so bad.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gallery\"><figcaption class=\"caption\">Most of the time, you really won&#8217;t be thinking about video games. \u2014 <em class=\"credit\">Images: Rory Cocker \/ Nintendo Life<\/em><\/figcaption><\/aside>\n<p>After all, I\u2019m going <em>travelling<\/em>! I\u2019m going to be jumping off waterfalls, riding motorbikes to white sand beaches, climbing mountains and partying every second of every day and night with young, beautiful people! Surely I won\u2019t have time to be worrying about my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/switch-eshop\/grid_autosport\">GRID Autosport<\/a> lap times, for crying out loud.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A change of heart<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cBut\u2026we could just buy a Nintendo Switch Lite\u2026\u201d whispers my subconscious, in almost Sm\u00e9agol-like fashion. \u201cWhat will master do on that tricksy 18-hour flight? Read &#8216;books&#8217;? <em>What\u2019s books, precious? What\u2019s books, ey?!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"left\">\n<p>[Switch Lite] turned out to be a properly meaningful upgrade in more ways than I could have imagined<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Sm\u00e9agol had a point. You won\u2019t see it on those glossy Instagram reels, and travellers\u2019 tales are usually filled with talk of sunrise visits to Buddhist temples rather than 19-hour bus journeys, but guess what? Travelling a continent as vast as Asia does tend to include a lot of\u2026well, travelling! Who\u2019d have thunk it?!<\/p>\n<p>And so the Switch Lite started to sound like a decent option. Thing is, I wasn\u2019t exactly bowled over by its reveal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA Switch that can\u2019t switch?! No kickstand, no rumble, no detachable Joy-Con? And why is it so <em>cheap<\/em> looking?!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I always said a Switch that couldn\u2019t be docked was a non-starter for me. Don\u2019t get me wrong, I\u2019ve played <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/switch-eshop\/rocket_league\">Rocket League<\/a> on the can with the best of \u2018em, but there\u2019s just something about throwing games like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/legend_of_zelda_breath_of_the_wild\">The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild<\/a> onto a 55\u201d screen that just makes me feel more\u2026invested.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Every little helps<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Besides, how much of a difference could swapping from a Switch to a Switch Lite <em>really<\/em> make?<\/p>\n<p>Well, reader, after spending an evening Ground Pounding my clothes (that were now rolled up into a compression cube, fyi) into oblivion, I can confirm it turned out to be the difference between being able to cram my filter bottle into the front pouch, and potentially catching some sort of waterborne disease.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture\"><a class=\"scanlines\" title=\"GRID Autosport\" href=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/fe277505eaad1\/grid-autosport.large.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciIHZpZXdCb3g9IjAgMCA5MDAgNjc1Ij48L3N2Zz4=\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/fe277505eaad1\/grid-autosport.900x.jpg\" alt=\"GRID Autosport\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption\">GRID Autosport looks sublime on the Lite&#8217;s smaller screen. \u2014 <em class=\"credit\">Image: Rory Cocker \/ Nintendo Life<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Of course, I lost that bottle in a Vietnamese hostel after about 10 weeks, rendering the whole operation completely meaningless, but you know what? I\u2019m still <em>SO<\/em> glad I brought the Lite with me; it turned out to be a properly meaningful upgrade in more ways than I could have imagined.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Fun in the sun<\/strong><\/h2>\n<blockquote class=\"right\">\n<p>I picked mine up from the (admittedly often nefarious) world of Facebook Marketplace for just \u00a380<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>You see, a gentleman of my age has extinguished enough birthday candles to recall the days of the Game Boy Advance and original Nintendo DS, both of which, while fantastic handhelds in their own right, didn\u2019t exactly boast the most impressive displays.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, I found the 720p panel on the Nintendo Switch Lite to be an absolute marvel. Even in the intense sunshine of northern Thailand, the screen\u2019s peak brightness of 380 nits meant that reflected glimpses of my double chin (curse those Oreos!) were mercifully rare.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, navigating Metroid Dread\u2019s dingy, subterranean corridors was an effortless affair, even during the two days I spent cruising down the Mekong River on the legendary \u2018slow boat\u2019.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gallery\"><figcaption class=\"caption\">No matter how long the journey, don&#8217;t try to play Tetris Effect while travelling by Hilux. You <strong>will<\/strong> be sick. \u2014 <em class=\"credit\">Images: Rory Cocker \/ Nintendo Life<\/em><\/figcaption><\/aside>\n<p>And as I recalled fond memories of seeking shade in the playground just to get walloped at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/ds\/metroid_prime_hunters\">Metroid Prime Hunters<\/a>, I couldn\u2019t help but think we\u2019ve come a long way.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Playing with power<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Coming from the HAC-001 model, the increased battery life was a huge boon, too; when you\u2019re living out of a bag and dashing about here, there and everywhere, keeping your devices topped up on power isn\u2019t always the first thing on your mind, so it was nice to know that missing a charge wasn\u2019t the end of the world. Especially when your charging setup would sometimes look like this&#8230;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture\"><a class=\"scanlines\" title=\"Charging setup\" href=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/5eeb71b9f6ec4\/charging-setup.large.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciIHZpZXdCb3g9IjAgMCA5MDAgMTIwMCI+PC9zdmc+\" width=\"900\" height=\"1200\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/5eeb71b9f6ec4\/charging-setup.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Charging setup\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption\">I&#8217;m fairly confident in saying this is probably classed as a fire hazard in at least 50 countries. \u2014 <em class=\"credit\">Image: Rory Cocker \/ Nintendo Life<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Not only does the Lite last longer on a single charge when compared to the launch model, but the smaller 3,570 mAh battery means it\u2019s also quicker to charge <em>and<\/em> ate up less of my powerbank\u2019s juice \u2013 an absolute lifeline for any traveller.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Sharp &amp; sturdy<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"picture right\"><a class=\"scanlines\" title=\"Skyward Sword HD\" href=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/5ddd46479e18b\/skyward-sword-hd.large.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciIHZpZXdCb3g9IjAgMCAzMDAgMjI1Ij48L3N2Zz4=\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/5ddd46479e18b\/skyward-sword-hd.300x.jpg\" alt=\"Skyward Sword HD\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption\">Skyward Sword HD really pops on the Lite&#8217;s sharper screen. Can&#8217;t do anything about those Tadtone quests, though. \u2014 <em class=\"credit\">Image: Rory Cocker \/ Nintendo Life<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Much was made of the decision to feature non-removable Joy-Con on the Lite, and whilst the move certainly isn\u2019t without its drawbacks, I was definitely glad of the console\u2019s increased sturdiness on the occasions where I dropped my backpack to the floor in sweaty, dramatic exhaustion. This happened a lot.<\/p>\n<p>And then there\u2019s the improved picture clarity. Games that run at native 720p look impossibly crisp and sharp on the Lite\u2019s smaller, more pixel-dense screen. The effect is doubly impressive when games also happen to run at 60fps, such is the case with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/legend_of_zelda_skyward_sword_hd\">The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD<\/a> which looks worlds apart from its muddier Wii debut.<\/p>\n<p>And the best part? I picked mine up from the (admittedly often nefarious) world of Facebook Marketplace for just \u00a380. It was in practically mint condition, and by the time I\u2019d pawned my launch Switch off, I was actually \u00a350 in the black.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Stickin&#8217; around<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Recently, the Twittersphere has been awash with talk of the Switch\u2019s ageing hardware becoming a bit long in the tooth, and with the recent Bloomberg report suggesting that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2023\/01\/nintendo-will-reportedly-boost-switch-production-in-2023\">Nintendo is actually ramping up production in 2023<\/a>, it seems we won\u2019t be getting a new hardware revision in the immediate future.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture\"><a class=\"scanlines\" title=\"Wolfenstein II\" href=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/c05a96e6bf656\/wolfenstein-ii.large.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciIHZpZXdCb3g9IjAgMCA5MDAgNTA2Ij48L3N2Zz4=\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/c05a96e6bf656\/wolfenstein-ii.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Wolfenstein II\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption\">This is honestly still witchcraft to me. \u2014 <em class=\"credit\">Image: Rory Cocker \/ Nintendo Life<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And honestly, I\u2019m fine with that. Barring any major catastrophe, I\u2019ll be there Day One for a Switch successor, sure.
