They return to their underwater homes, pour themselves a coffee and watch their day’s highlights on TV. It’s not a bad day’s work; but they are alone, stuck in a cycle of people asking “where is the monster?” and never “how is the monster?” Without local bars, mutual friends, community events or even Tinder, the kaiju dating scene is a tough world. If only there was some way that we mortal humans could help…

We imagine that a thought process similar to this went through the minds of Squiddershins when it was deciding on the topic for its latest game. The product of that process is Kaichu: The Kaiju Dating Sim, a game which encourages those tired of the dating race in the real world to imagine how tough it would be if they were 300 feet tall.

Your task will be to take Gigachu — a radioactive dinosaur looking for love — on a global speed dating mission to find ‘monster right’. “What exactly is a kaiju’s love language?”, we hear you ask — well, based on the game’s trailer it seems to be something along the lines of city-wide destruction with a few flames and laser beams thrown in for good measure (not a million miles away from a standard season of Love Island then).

With over 24 unique locations to meet your prospective partner, you will have to listen to your date’s dreams and desires before providing complementary answers in order to ensure amorous success. Never mind piña coladas and getting caught in the rain, in Kaichu there is nothing more romantic than finding someone that loves destroying famous landmarks and hearing the screams of innocent bystanders as much as your do.

For more information on what to expect from these destructive dates, check out the game’s full list of features below:

• Multiple storylines and endings: 6 loveable kaiju. Each with their own storyline and relationship obstacles.

• Nonlinear Gameplay: Completely open to explore the map and date any kaiju from the start of the game.

• 24 Locations: All based on real-world locations, each with their own smashable monument.

• Innovative Quiz Gameplay: Reinventing the dating sim genre with compatibility questions based on each kaiju’s personality and preferences.

• Hand-painted art: Hand-painted backgrounds and hand-animated kaiju made with love in the style of TV animation.

• Original Soundtrack by Clark Aboud (Kind Words, Slay the Spire)

Images: Top Hat Studios

An unsuccessful date will result in even more destruction (no likey, more fighty) so we hope your small talk is up to scratch.

Kaichu: The Kaiju Dating Sim is due to be released on Switch on September 7th, so you don’t have too long to wait before you can find out how exactly a tiny-armed dinosaur would hug the love of their life.

What do you make of this unique dating sim?
