These affiliate partnerships do not influence our editorial content. <\/em> <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A new subscribe button will direct users away from the Netflix app and onto its website to set up new subscriptions.\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>In March, Apple <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/22\/03\/30\/apple-now-allowing-reader-apps-to-link-out-to-membership-websites\">informed developers<\/a> that it would allow &#8220;reader&#8221; apps to offer a link to an external website so users can create and manage accounts outside of the <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/inside\/app-store\">App Store<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>Reader apps are defined as software that displays outside content on iOS, including previously purchased videos, music, magazines, newspapers, and books.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>When tapped, the button warns that the transaction is no longer Apple&#8217;s responsibility and that users will not be able to manage their subscriptions or request refunds through Apple. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>Generally, Apple bans outside links \u2014 particularly to alternate payment platforms \u2014 as part of its anti-steering policies on the App Store. Following an investigation from the Japanese Fair Trade Commission, Apple was forced to make a change to its <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/21\/09\/02\/apple-to-allow-external-account-management-links-in-reader-apps-to-close-japanese-antitrust-investigation\">in-app link policy<\/a> to comply with new rules in Japan. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>Although the change was Japan-focused, Apple said in September that the updated guidelines would apply worldwide.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>Apple has been under fire for its anti-steering policies globally. For example, while it won a resounding victory in the <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/20\/08\/23\/apple-versus-epic-games-fortnite-app-store-saga----the-story-so-far\"><em>Epic Games v. Apple<\/em> legal battle<\/a>, one of the few rulings made against Apple would ban the company&#8217;s anti-steering policies.
