It included a run of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/pokemon_brilliant_diamond_and_shining_pearl\">Pok\u00e9mon Brilliant Diamond &amp; Shining Pearl<\/a>, a tense relay race in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/super_mario_maker_2\">Super Mario Maker 2<\/a>, and an absolutely nuts 30-minute run of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pushsquare.com\/games\/ps5\/elden_ring\" class=\"external\">Elden Ring<\/a> as the finale.<\/p>\n<p>But every year, there&#8217;s always one run that rises above the rest \u2014 and, admittedly, it&#8217;s usually a Zelda game, for whatever reason. This year, it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/n64\/legend_of_zelda_ocarina_of_time\">Ocarina of Time<\/a>&#8230; or, it was <em>sort of<\/em> Ocarina of Time. Let us explain.<\/p>\n<p>GDQ often features this thing called TASBot, you see \u2014 short for Tool-Assisted Speedrun bot \u2014 which can input button presses faster and more precisely than any human hand. That might sound like cheating, and it is, but it makes for some really impressive speedruns, like this one, which involved a bunch of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/switch-eshop\/celeste\">Celeste<\/a> speedrunners coming together to create the perfect Celeste speedrun over 2,000 hours:<\/p>\n<aside class=\"object object-youtube\">\n<figure class=\"youtube\" data-videoid=\"ovaMlxgLLi4\">[embedded content]<figcaption class=\"youtube-sub\">Subscribe to <a class=\"external\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/subscription_center?add_user=nintendolife\">Nintendo Life<\/a> on <span class=\"g-ytsubscribe\" data-channel=\"nintendolife\" data-layout=\"default\" data-count=\"default\"><a class=\"external\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/nintendolife\">YouTube<\/a><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/aside>\n<p>The TASBot trick in the Ocarina of Time run, instead of allowing them to do precision-perfect platforming, instead allows for something called Arbitrary Code Execution, another common and <em>very<\/em> difficult speedrunning trick. Long, complicated story short \u2014 ACE lets players put in a series of specific button presses to trick the game into doing things.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of Ocarina of Time, it lets them get the Triforce.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture ptris\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciIHZpZXdCb3g9IjAgMCA5MDAgNTA2Ij48L3N2Zz4=\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/d9ecb0ac11376\/2022-07-04-15-14-16-oot-triforce-percent-ace-showcase-tasbot-links-here-together-with-sgdq-2022.900x.jpg\" alt=\"2022 07 04 15 14 16 OoT Triforce Percent ACE Showcase TASBot Links Here Together With SGDQ 2022!\"><\/figure>\n<p>It also lets the speedrunners access a bunch of OoT&#8217;s beta content, like the Arwing, the Butterfly item, and more. But that was all a ruse! It was all about the Triforce the whole time!<\/p>\n<p>Except that <em>wasn&#8217;t<\/em> what it was all about. Not entirely. At the end of the run, Link starts hearing someone whisper his name&#8230; and offer him a single wish. Be King of Hyrule, become rich, or see the future.
