He&#8217;s widely regarded as one of the best wrestlers of all time and has been the world champion for a record 16-times (joint with Ric Flair), but the star is also known as an actor and a rapper. And as the face of the Nintendo Switch in America prior to the console&#8217;s release.<\/p>\n<p>Back in 2017, the professional wrestler filmed a number of promotional ads for the Switch which included him playing the console in &#8216;unexpected places&#8217; while also being present at events where fans could play <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/1-2-switch\">1-2-Switch<\/a> at pop-up locations.<\/p>\n<p>But according to wrestling fan and Giant Bomb creative director Dan Ryckert, Cena didn&#8217;t just turn up, film his part and leave. <a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/gonintendo.com\/contents\/5569-in-2017-john-cena-repeatedly-told-nintendo-that-he-wanted-a-new-2d-metroid\">GoNintendo reports<\/a> that the wrestler apparently asked Nintendo for a brand new 2D <strong>Metroid<\/strong> game. Of course, we did eventually get a brand new one (ignoring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/3ds\/metroid_samus_returns\">Metroid: Samus Returns<\/a>, a remake of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/gameboy\/metroid_ii_return_of_samus\">Metroid II<\/a>) in 2021&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/metroid_dread\">Metroid Dread<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Even though it was four years after Cena had filmed the adverts, Ryckert says that Nintendo send Cena a copy of Dread, and Cena&#8217;s team emailed the Big N back saying that &#8220;John loves it&#8221;. Aww!<\/p>\n<aside class=\"object object-tweet\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p><span lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">During this photo shoot in 2017, Cena repeatedly told the Nintendo reps how much he wanted a new 2D Metroid. When Metroid Dread came out years later, he was sent a copy. Well, we&#8217;re all glad we got a brand new brilliant Metroid game.<\/p>\n<p>Former Nintendo Minute co-host Krysta Yang replied to a fan&#8217;s response to Ryckert&#8217;s tweet, confirming that this discussion would&#8217;ve happened around the time of the advert&#8217;s photoshoot. She also corroborates that Cena was indeed a huge Metroid fan!<\/p>\n<aside class=\"object object-tweet\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p><span lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Sure was! He did say how much of a Metroid fan he was. A few months back, Steve Austin and Cody Rhodes briefly <a href=\"%20WWE's%20Stone%20Cold%20Steve%20Austin%20Says%20Breath%20Of%20The%20Wild%20Is%20The%20Best%20Zelda%20Game\">debated which was the best <strong>Zelda<\/strong> game<\/a> in a short clip advertising Austin&#8217;s podcast.<\/p>\n<p>In case you missed it around the time of the Switch&#8217;s launch, here&#8217;s one of the advertisements John Cena did for Nintendo.
