When Nintendo revealed the cast of the Super Mario animated movie<\/a>, a lot of fans were surprised to see the long-time voice of Mario, Charles Martinet, had been replaced with Hollywood movie star Chris Pratt.<\/p>\n

Since then, concerns have been raised about a non-Italian actor being given the role of Mario in his first animated movie outing. We’ve heard Illumination CEO and the film’s co-producer Chris Meledandri defend this casting before<\/a> – noting how the voice is “phenomenal” and now the topic has been raised once again.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Variety<\/a>, Meledandri mentioned how he had “Italian American heritage” and didn’t have to worry when making the decision to cast Chris. He also revealed how the film is now “three quarters done”. Here it is in full:<\/p>\n

\u201cChris was cast because we felt he could give a great performance as Mario. And now that we\u2019ve done about 15 recording sessions, and the movie is three-quarters done, I sit here and say that I love his performance as Mario,\u201d said Meledandri. He said that considering he had \u201cItalian American heritage, he could make that decision without worrying about offending Italians or Italian Americans.\u201d \u201cI think we\u2019re gonna be just fine. Especially because (Pratt) he\u2019s given such a strong performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Back in April, the Mario movie was delayed from 2022 to 2023<\/a>. Apart from Chris Pratt, the cast will include Charlie Day (Pacific Rim<\/em>) as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit<\/em>) as Princess Peach, Jack Black (School of Rock<\/em>) as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key (Toy Story 4<\/em>) as Toad and Seth Rogan (Pineapple Express<\/em>) as Donkey Kong.<\/p>\n
