It’s almost E3! Wait, sorry (presses fingers to headset) really? Hm. Okay. It’s not E3!<\/p>\n

But<\/em> that doesn’t mean we won’t still get bombarded with video game announcements for the entire week all the same. Hooray!<\/p>\n

Our team got together to make our own predictions, from potential Zelda news to our wildest, most hopeless dreams…<\/p>\n

Will there be a Nintendo Direct?<\/h2>\n

KATE: There has to be, right?<\/p>\n

OLLIE: Of course there will be! Haha\u2026 right..? RIGHT? Oh God, what if there isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

ALANA: I think everyone will go into meltdown! People are very much expecting something<\/em> from Nintendo this month. We haven\u2019t had a Direct since February, so it\u2019s about time!<\/p>\n

OLLIE: I kinda feel like Nintendo would have said by now if it wasn\u2019t doing a Direct. It would be mighty odd if we just went through June without hearing anything<\/em>.<\/p>\n

GAVIN: That’s true \u2014 they’re very good at telegraphing and managing expectations these days. I imagine we’d know by now if nothing was planned.<\/p>\n

TOM: I strongly suspect we\u2019ll get an E3-timed Nintendo Direct \u2013 not because of the now-absent E3, as such, but lots of dedicated fans (and the media!) are conditioned for early-mid June to be packed with reveals. Microsoft is carrying on with its event, we have the Geoff-fest<\/a> as well, and various other publishers and showcases will be fighting for our attention.<\/p>\n

In terms of what Nintendo will do, I think they may repeat the 2021 format of a pre-recorded Direct and then some Nintendo Treehouse streams to show off demos. This makes sense not only because of all the upcoming games we know about, but also inevitable new reveals.<\/p>\n

KATE: Knowing our luck, they\u2019ll announce it the night before and we\u2019ll have no time to prepare!<\/p>\n

ALANA: That\u2019s usually Nintendo\u2019s way! Either a week\u2019s notice or no notice.<\/p>\n

KATE: I\u2019m going to be the optimist here and say\u2026 yes<\/em>. I know it\u2019s easier to say no, because we saw it (a tiny bit) in March and it sounds like they really<\/em> need more time to work on it, but it\u2019s been a year since the last full Zelda trailer<\/a>. And mama needs somethin\u2019 to speculate about. Gimme.<\/p>\n

ALANA: I can\u2019t say I\u2019ve got the same optimism as you, Kate! Maybe we\u2019ll get a little sneak peek? Maybe?<\/em> But I think Nintendo will want to wait a bit longer to show some more now that we know this is a spring 2023 release. Though you can\u2019t bet on anything\u2026<\/p>\n

OLLIE: Yeah, it\u2019ll definitely be there, I reckon. If you think back, Nintendo showcased the first Breath of the Wild<\/a> at E3 2016 quite extensively, with the game launching in Spring the next year. So there\u2019s every possibility we\u2019ll see the same thing again with the sequel. I\u2019d bet my Switch on it. NO WAIT.<\/p>\n

ALANA: Oh no, don\u2019t go THAT far!<\/p>\n

Any remakes you\u2019re dying to see?<\/h2>\n

Maybe Kate’s the only person who wants this, though<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

ALANA: I\u2019m pretty satisfied for remakes on Switch for a while \u2013 next month we\u2019re getting Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series<\/a> and<\/em> Live A Live<\/a> \u2013 so I\u2019m not burning for anything. Though, this might be cheating, but can we finally get that Metroid Prime remake<\/a> that\u2019s been rumoured for so long?<\/p>\n

KATE: I\u2019m a wee bit burnt out on remakes for the time being, BUT, that said\u2026 I wouldn\u2019t say no to Twilight Princess<\/a> and Wind Waker<\/a>. And there\u2019s always the very, very slim chance that some day, Nintendo will announce a glossy remake of Viva Pi\u00f1ata<\/strong>. I mean, it belongs<\/em> on Switch! And surely Rare misses Nintendo\u2026<\/p>\n

OLLIE: Definitely with you regarding Twilight Princess and Wind Waker, Kate, as is the entire Switch fan base, I\u2019d imagine. There\u2019s not really anything else I\u2019m particularly interested in seeing.<\/p>\n

GAVIN: What’s Grezzo up to at the moment? Feels like it’s been a while since we’ve heard from them, and that Link’s Awakening<\/a> remake style could fit any number of top-down classics. One of them might make for some fun pre-BOTW2 filler.<\/p>\n

KATE: Ha, I actually checked what Grezzo’s up to as well! I think they’re doing some RPG<\/a>. Unless that’s a cover story…<\/p>\n

Have you heard any rumours you think might be true?<\/h2>\n

KATE: I keep hearing about GoldenEye<\/a>, so I think that\u2019s a likely one. To be honest, other than that, I feel like the Nintendo rumour mill is having a bit of a break these days. Production seems to have slowed down a lot during COVID, so I\u2019m interested to see if that\u2019ll change. I mean, I don\u2019t know what a lot of companies are even working on right now.<\/p>\n

ALANA: No one say Switch 2\u2026 no one say Switch 2\u2026 But yeah, I\u2019m with you, Kate. It honestly feels very quiet right now. Which is good! Except, you know, the Metroid Prime remake. Can I put that twice? Is that cheating?<\/p>\n

OLLIE: Metroid Prime is a good bet, to be honest. We\u2019ll probably see that toward the end of the year. I\u2019ve not heard anything else, though!<\/p>\n

Any surprise \u201cand it\u2019s out now!\u201d drops?<\/h2>\n

KATE: Oh yeah, Nintendo loves those. No idea what it\u2019ll be, though. Some high-profile indie? *gasp* SILKSONG<\/a>? Haha just kidding, I haven\u2019t even started Hollow Knight<\/a> yet, so I need more time.<\/p>\n

ALANA: If Silksong shadow drops during \u201cE3\u201d then I might faint. Sports Story<\/a> might be a more likely cause for a shadow drop \u2013 neither of those showed up at the Indie Showcase (the former is absolutely big-showcase material at this rate, anyway). Maybe the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters<\/strong> that launched on Steam could be a surprise drop?<\/p>\n

OLLIE: I\u2019ll go really safe with this one and say the next batch of tracks for the Mario Kart 8 Booster Course Pack<\/a>. Wave 2, is it? They\u2019ll show off the tracks and be like \u201cit\u2019s out later today, woooooo\u201d. In terms of full game releases, though, I\u2019m not sure\u2026 I doubt Silksong will shadow drop.<\/p>\n

GAVIN: What Ollie said.<\/p>\n

KATE: I had entirely forgotten about the Booster Course Pack. Oops.<\/p>\n

Will there be a big addition to the NSO library\u2026 or even Game Boy games?<\/h2>\n

OLLIE: Nope! Not much more to say on that. Nintendo seems quite content with dropping new additions at the most random intervals.<\/p>\n

KATE: I\u2019ve been a little underwhelmed with the games so far, but I don\u2019t think that\u2019s Nintendo\u2019s fault necessarily\u2026 they\u2019ve got the big Zeldas, Banjo-Kazooie<\/a>, Earthbound<\/a> and Star Fox 64<\/a>, but I just can\u2019t get into the \u201890s controls now that I know better. I\u2019d love to see Game Boy games as long as they don\u2019t do that awful AI sprite upscaling<\/a>. Please<\/em>.<\/p>\n

ALANA: I haven\u2019t upgraded to the Expansion Pack<\/a> yet, but Game Boy\/GBA would probably be the tipping point. This Direct would be the place to announce that, I think. Although, would I be an idiot to say that Chrono Trigger<\/a> could be announced as an addition to the SNES library? It was on the Wii Virtual Console! C\u2019mon! Everyone wants that, right?<\/p>\n

Should we expect more from Kirby\u2019s 30th Anniversary, or is Forgotten Land it for now?<\/h2>\n

ALANA: I\u2019m mixed on this. I feel like Nintendo is riding a bit of a Kirby high right now, but also, I don\u2019t know what<\/em> it could do in a Direct. I don\u2019t think it\u2019ll be a brand new game, of course, and Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards<\/a> just<\/em> came to NSO. So, unless Game Boy is added, I\u2019m not sure.<\/p>\n

GAVIN: I’m still pottering through Forgotten Land<\/a> and am happy with just that. Unless they want to put out Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn Deluxe<\/a>, which would be GOTY material.<\/p>\n

KATE: I am not the Kirby expert, but I reckon that\u2019s it for now. Maybe Kirby\u2019s Dream Land<\/a> on the NSO service to kick off the Game Boy games?<\/p>\n

OLLIE: I ruddy hope that\u2019s it. Hahaha. Sorry, Kirby ain\u2019t my bag. I don\u2019t think we\u2019ll see anything else though. Yes, maybe a new addition to NSO, but I\u2019m not confident on that.<\/p>\n

How about games we haven\u2019t heard from in a while, like Bayonetta 3<\/a> and Metroid Prime 4<\/a>?<\/h2>\n

KATE: I predict no news on Metroid, and maybe<\/em> a Bayo update, but I feel like I say that a lot.<\/p>\n

ALANA: Bayonetta 3 is meant to be out this year, so I\u2019m pretty hopeful we\u2019ll get something. If Metroid Prime 4 shows up, it\u2019ll be a teaser at most. Sorry.<\/p>\n

OLLIE: Oh, you two. Have some faith! It\u2019s been over three years now since development on MP4 restarted. Plus, we recently got that mysterious new Twitter banner on Retro Studios\u2019 account page, right? It could have been nothing, but something\u2019s telling me that this is our year. Metroid Dread really reignited interest in the series and I reckon Nintendo will want to ride the hype train. We\u2019ll see a teaser, at least<\/em>.<\/p>\n

ALANA: Okay, okay, maybe<\/em>. Dragon Age 4<\/strong> just<\/em> got an official title. A sliver of something, maybe.<\/p>\n

TOM: Surely<\/em> a date is on the horizon for Bayonetta 3. In terms of \u2018surprises\u2019, it feels like time to get a glimpse of Metroid Prime 4; its development reboot was over 3 years ago, Retro Studios has been busy and recruiting, so a trailer for a TBC arrival date may be a \u2018one last thing\u2019.<\/p>\n

TOM: It seems inevitable that the next Mario is on the way, as it\u2019s been a little while and there\u2019s the movie coming next year. My suspicion is that Donkey Kong will be in it as a playable character of some sort, as a lot of \u2018insider\u2019 rumours (namely all those DK game ones) tend to get projects mixed up and we know the big ape is a notable character in the movie.<\/p>\n

KATE: Yes please. Mario\u2019s been quiet for ages (because he\u2019s dead maybe<\/a>).<\/p>\n

ALANA: Well that<\/em> would be nice. But yes, RIP Mario, gone since March 2021.<\/p>\n

OLLIE: I\u2019m not convinced it\u2019ll be a sequel to Odyssey, but a new Mario game in general? Yeah, maybe! It\u2019s about time, I think.<\/p>\n

KATE: And before anyone asks, no, the Mario + Rabbids<\/a> game doesn\u2019t count.<\/p>\n

ALANA: That has<\/em> to be there, though. Just not the<\/em> Mario game.<\/p>\n

GAVIN: 10th anniversary of the Year of Luigi next year. Just sayin’.<\/p>\n
