{"id":12518,"date":"2018-02-09T23:09:00","date_gmt":"2018-02-09T23:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/314537"},"modified":"2018-02-09T23:09:00","modified_gmt":"2018-02-09T23:09:00","slug":"the-hands-free-development-of-dig-dog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2018\/02\/09\/the-hands-free-development-of-dig-dog\/","title":{"rendered":"The hands-free development of Dig Dog"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8211; Developer\u00a0of <em>Dig Dog<\/em>\u00a0Rusty Moyher\u00a0on the process of coding by voice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2018\/02\/coding-without-a-keystroke-the-hands-free-creation-of-a-full-video-game\/\">In an interview with Ars Technica<\/a>\u00a0published earlier today, game developer Rusty Moyher\u00a0shared how he programmed and created art assets for\u00a0<em>Dig Dog<\/em>\u00a0using his voice and an interesting alternative to a hands-on mouse.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After being diagnosed with Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) five years ago, Moyher\u00a0needed to find an alternative to traditional keyboard and mouse development.<\/p>\n<p>Relief came in the form of taking full breaks from typing and using a mouse, but that wouldn&#8217;t be good enough. &#8220;I still want to make games,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2018\/02\/coding-without-a-keystroke-the-hands-free-creation-of-a-full-video-game\/\">he admitted.<\/a> &#8220;It\u2019s hard to imagine any career or job that doesn\u2019t involve computers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the pursuit of proving that video games could be developed without using his hands, Moyher\u00a0found a video <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8SkdfdXWYaI\">by developer Travis Rudd<\/a>\u00a0which broke down how he customized the voice recognition software\u00a0Dragon NaturallySpeaking to write code in Python using only his voice.<\/p>\n<p>Despite warnings from various forums about the limitations of coding using Dragon,\u00a0Moyher decided to give it a try.\u00a0&#8220;The commands you come up with, basically in a made-up language, are all built to be quickly and easily recognized by Dragon,&#8221; Moyher\u00a0explains, <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2018\/02\/coding-without-a-keystroke-the-hands-free-creation-of-a-full-video-game\/\">saying\u00a0he recommended<\/a> &#8220;short, tight words or phrases that can be executed quickly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Coding using this method meant creating an entirely new vocabulary.\u00a0&#8220;I needed to build a vocabulary that was suited for what I was doing that I was familiar with,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2018\/02\/coding-without-a-keystroke-the-hands-free-creation-of-a-full-video-game\/\">he said.<\/a> &#8220;The process of coding by voice is, I have to do programming tasks, like normal, and come up with commands and modify the system.
