In the magazine business, the Back Page is where you’d find all the weird goofs that we couldn’t fit in anywhere else. Some may call it “filler”; we prefer “a whole page to make terrible jokes that are tangentially related to the content of the mag”.<\/em><\/p>\n

We don’t have (paper) pages on the internet, but we still love terrible jokes \u2014 so welcome to our semi-regular feature, Back Page<\/a>. Today, Ollie speaks to three people who know better than most just what it takes to be the very best, like no-one ever was…<\/em><\/p>\n

To celebrate Mother\u2019s Day this year, we\u2019ve put together a special meeting with some very special women. They\u2019re the mothers of the Pok\u00e9mon Champions from their respective regions and they\u2019ve kindly taken the time to cross the realms of the digital world into the real world to talk through their experiences in supporting their children and what they think of the overarching world of Pok\u00e9mon.<\/p>\n

To protect their privacy (because let\u2019s face it, they get enough attention within their own regions for raising a Pok\u00e9mon Champion), we\u2019ll be referring to each woman by their region; so we\u2019ve got here with us today ‘Johto’ (Gold\/Silver<\/a>), ‘Alola’ (Sun\/Moon<\/a>), and ‘Galar’ (Sword\/Shield<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Alola:<\/strong> Alola!<\/p>\n

Galar:<\/strong> Y\u2019alright?<\/p>\n

Johto:<\/strong> Hiiii!<\/p>\n

So I wanted to just start off and say what a wonderful job you\u2019ve all done raising the future Pok\u00e9mon Champions; only ten years old and your kids have accomplished so much! How does it feel?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Galar:<\/strong> It\u2019s ace, y\u2019know, I\u2019m so proud of my little one. I did initially think it would be pretty dangerous; you know, going off on their own, exploring hazardous environments, tackling the gym challenge… It\u2019s a lot for someone so young, but I had every faith that they\u2019d do well.<\/p>\n

Johto:<\/strong> Oh absolutely, I agree. I can\u2019t lie, I got mighty upset when they left home to tackle their Pok\u00e9mon adventure, but I had enough going on back home to keep me occupied. Sometimes, you\u2019ve just got to let them fly the nest, and ten is a ripe old age, isn’t it?<\/p>\n

Alola:<\/strong> Wait, did you say \u2018gym challenge\u2019, [Galar]? What\u2019s that?<\/p>\n

Galar:<\/strong> The gyms dotted around the region. You know, \u201cdefeat the gym leaders and take on the Elite Four\u201d?<\/p>\n

Alola:<\/strong> Uh.. no..? We don\u2019t have that.<\/p>\n

[long pause]<\/em><\/p>\n

Johto:<\/strong> Wait, what?<\/p>\n

Alola:<\/strong> Yeah, we don\u2019t have it where I\u2019m from. We have \u2018trials\u2019 instead – you have to face off against big, powerful Pok\u00e9mon – frankly, the gym challenge doesn\u2019t sound particularly fun for my liking.<\/p>\n

Galar:<\/strong> You have gyms right, [Johto]?<\/p>\n

Johto:<\/strong> Are you kidding? We have the best gyms out of all the regions. In fact, once my kid completed the Elite Four, they were able to hop on over to Kanto and take on the gym challenge there too. Apparently some chap called Iwata made that possible, I dunno\u2026<\/p>\n

Alola:<\/strong> I\u2026 didn\u2019t know this was such a widespread thing.<\/p>\n

Galar:<\/strong> Oh yeah, gyms are where it\u2019s at. This \u2018trial\u2019 thing sounds a bit\u2026 I\u2019m not sure, trivial?<\/p>\n

Alola:<\/strong> I beg your pa\u2014<\/p>\n

Okay, okay, I think we\u2019re getting a bit off topic here. Let\u2019s move onto your role within your children\u2019s journeys. How have you supported them during their adventures?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Johto:<\/strong> Oh wow, where do I begin? I started off by making sure my child had the correct daylight saving time set, because that\u2019s absolutely vital<\/em> in my opinion.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve also been saving some of the money that they\u2019ve been winning from Pok\u00e9mon battles \u2014 you know how kids are with money \u2014 but I\u2019ll treat them to the odd Potion or Doll here and there along the way.<\/p>\n

Finally, I love to keep in touch with my kid whenever possible through the Pok\u00e9Gear; I just adore hearing their voice and listening to their crazy stories! Y\u2019know, they actually saw a wild Entei the other day? Can you believe it?!<\/p>\n

Galar:<\/strong> I, um\u2026 I\u2019m here if they want to come home and rest.<\/p>\n

Alola:<\/strong> Yeah, me too. We have a Meowth.<\/p>\n

Johto:<\/strong> Hold on, hold on\u2026 Are you telling me you simply let your kids accumulate money without any kind of guidance or restrictions?<\/p>\n

Aloha:<\/strong> \u2026<\/p>\n

Galar<\/strong>:<\/strong> \u2026<\/p>\n

Johto:<\/strong> Well I find that highly irresponsible! Who knows what they\u2019ve been spending that money on? They might rock up back at home with a bag full of Rare Candy!<\/p>\n

Alola:<\/strong> Excuse me, but how my child handles their money is of no concern to you!<\/p>\n

Galar:<\/strong> Yeah, I think you need to stop now before I really go spare.<\/p>\n

Please, can we be civil? I don\u2019t understand this hostility between Pok\u00e9mon regions…<\/strong><\/p>\n

Johto:<\/strong> Well we all know Gold and Silver are the best\u2026<\/p>\n

Alola:<\/strong> Oh, what, because you have day and night cycles? Honey, please\u2026<\/p>\n

Johto:<\/strong> Well, it\u2019s better than no gyms. Seriously, no gyms!<\/p>\n

Galar:<\/strong> We\u2019ve got Wild Areas.<\/p>\n

Johto:<\/strong> \u2026 Wild what?<\/p>\n

Actually, that\u2019s a nice transition into my next question. Could you describe your different regions for me? Perhaps share your favourite aspect of them?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Galar:<\/strong> … I might as well start, then. So the Wild Areas are wonderful, my kid wouldn\u2019t stop going on about them. They\u2019re basically big open spaces where you can encounter huge Pok\u00e9mon, some maybe even dozens of levels above your own! They really are beautiful, picturesque landscapes, with the bustling city of Motostoke in the background\u2026 Just gorgeous!<\/p>\n

Johto:<\/strong> So\u2026 Hang on. Are you saying you have an open world? Like, proper<\/em> open world?<\/p>\n

Galar:<\/strong> Well no, not completely open. Just the wild areas. Everything else is pretty linear to be fair. You know, it\u2019s funny actually, my home town of Postwick only contains my home and Hop\u2019s home, it\u2019s very quaint! Hop is my child\u2019s mate, by the way. Lovely boy.<\/p>\n

Alola:<\/strong> Okay, so we thought your region might actually<\/em> be open world from what you were saying, but I guess not\u2026 That\u2019s cool though, no judgement!<\/p>\n

Galar:<\/strong> Well, what about yours?!<\/p>\n

Alola:<\/strong> Oh my goodness, Alola is stunning. It\u2019s a collection of islands and it\u2019s just so warm<\/em>, with incredible beaches, palm trees, you name it! Plus, did you know that the word \u2018Alola\u2019 is palindromic? Yeah, bet you didn\u2019t!<\/p>\n

Johto:<\/strong> No, we totally did.<\/p>\n

Alola:<\/strong> Well okay, what about your region?<\/p>\n

Johto:<\/strong> Well as I said before, we\u2019ve basically got like two in one, a \u2018buy one get one free\u2019 kinda thing with Johto and Kanto. My region is iconic<\/em> at this point, let\u2019s be honest; all the visitors say it\u2019s their favourite region.<\/p>\n

Galar:<\/strong> Did I mention you can actually see<\/em> the wild Pok\u00e9mon in Galar?<\/p>\n

Alola:<\/strong> Yeah, what\u2019s up with that, actually?<\/p>\n

Johto:<\/strong> We were made before Galar was, honey. This new-fangled tech is way beyond my understanding.<\/p>\n

Galar:<\/strong> Says Mrs. Daylight Saving Time over here\u2026<\/p>\n

Okay, well\u2026 I think we\u2019re nearing the end now. To close out then, can you each give a piece of advice to all of the trainers out there who may be just starting out?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Alola:<\/strong> Oh sure! Well, I think I\u2019d mainly say don\u2019t worry about the competition so much. Go at your own pace, explore the world, bond with your Pok\u00e9mon, and really just make the most of the experience.<\/p>\n

Galar:<\/strong> Ditto. [long pause]<\/em> Sorry, I\u2019m not repeating what Alola said, I\u2019m saying get yourself a Ditto! Oh my gosh, they\u2019re brilliant, and so squishy!<\/p>\n

Okay then! And finally, [Johto]?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Johto:<\/strong> Remember to call your mothers! They love you. And hey, that goes to everyone reading this, not just those in the Pok\u00e9mon world. This pair might lounge around all day, but I can tell you that moms work their absolute butts off to protect and provide for their children, and they deserve all the love in the world.<\/p>\n
