These affiliate partnerships do not influence our editorial content. <\/em> <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Former star NBA basketball player Magic Johnson tackled a range of topics in a new interview, including his upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/inside\/apple-tv-plus\">Apple TV+<\/a> docuseries &#8220;They Call Me Magic.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>Speaking with <em>Variety<\/em>, Johnson revealed some details about how the four-part docuseries <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/tv\/features\/magic-johnson-lakers-they-call-me-magic-1235224091\/\">got its start<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>According to Johnson, companies from across the media industry began knocking on his door after he agreed to be interviewed for Michael Jordan docuseries &#8220;The Last Dance,&#8221; which was released in 2020. The success of that series had companies from NBC to Apple placed bids.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>&#8220;Everybody called,&#8221; Johnson said. &#8220;Everybody put in a bid. And then NBC got serious. And Apple said, &#8216;No way.&#8217; I love their approach, because they waited. They came in and said, &#8216;This is over.'&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>Although Johnson didn&#8217;t expand on what that mean, it&#8217;s likely that Apple&#8217;s deep pockets helped the <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/inside\/iphone\">iPhone<\/a> maker land the documentary series \u2014 and beat out NBC.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>In addition to being a professional basketball player, Johnson is also the former president of basketball operations for the Los Angeles Lakers.
