(You can check out longer reads from the past twelve months by perusing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/tags\/best-of-2020\">our Best of 2020 feature selection<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>So, while you might be hesitant to take a trip down Recent Memory Lane, we promise this recap of 2020 will include <em>mostly positive<\/em> recollections. That said, there&#8217;ll be a couple of unavoidable negatives to touch on, too \u2014 we&#8217;ll try not to dwell.<\/p>\n<p>So strap in and let\u2019s have a look back on an eventful twelve months.<\/p>\n<h2>January &#8211; Pok\u00e9mon Direct, Byleth Direct, but no &#8216;proper&#8217; Direct<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\">\n<div class=\"img\"><a title=\"Pokemon Direct Jan 2020\" href=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/c05596fee2a04\/pokemon-direct-jan-2020.original.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg' viewBox='0 0 900 503'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" width=\"900\" height=\"503\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/c05596fee2a04\/pokemon-direct-jan-2020.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Pokemon Direct Jan 2020\"><\/a><span class=\"image-credit\" title=\"Image Credit\">The Pok\u00e9mon Company<\/span><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Looking at Nintendo&#8217;s 2020 slate, there was <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/dr_kawashimas_brain_training_for_nintendo_switch\">Brain Training<\/a><\/strong> at the start of the year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/tokyo_mirage_sessions_fe_encore\">Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore<\/a> in mid-January, the delayed <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/animal_crossing_new_horizons\">Animal Crossing<\/a><\/strong> coming in March&#8230; and not much else on the horizon. While many were hungry for a full-fat Nintendo Direct (something we wouldn&#8217;t end up seeing all year, in fact), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2020\/01\/watch_pokemon_direct_january_2020_-_live\">January Pok\u00e9mon Direct<\/a> revealed a plethora of details around the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/switch-eshop\/pokemon_sword_and_shield_-_the_isle_of_armor\">Sword &amp; Shield Expansion Pass<\/a>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/switch-eshop\/pokemon_home\">Pok\u00e9mon HOME<\/a><\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/pokemon_mystery_dungeon_rescue_team_dx\"><strong>Pok\u00e9mon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX<\/strong><\/a> and more with over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2020\/01\/more_than_200_old_pokemon_are_being_added_to_sword_and_shields_national_dex\">200 old &#8216;mon returning<\/a> to the expanded Galar National Dex.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2020\/01\/watch_super_smash_bros_ultimates_5th_dlc_character_revealed_-_live\">Byleth was revealed<\/a> as the 5th DLC fighter for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/super_smash_bros_ultimate\">Smash Bros. Ultimate<\/a><\/strong> (as well as a whole new Fighter&#8217;s Pass), Bethesda&#8217;s retro <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2020\/01\/bethesdas_hellish_add-on_update_for_doom_and_doom_ii_is_now_available\">DOOMs received an update<\/a> that made them essential purchases for rip-and-tearers, Masahiro Sakurai <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2020\/01\/random_smash_bros_director_masahiro_sakurai_played_242_playstation_games_last_year\">revealed<\/a> that he&#8217;d played an awful lot of Playstation games in 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2020\/01\/rumour_prolific_leaker_says_well_get_paper_mario_and_a_2d_metroid_this_year\">a prolific leaker<\/a> suggested we&#8217;d see a Paper Mario game and a 2D Metroid game later in the year (we&#8217;re still waiting on the latter, of course), and Hideki Kamiya started off the year in fine form with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2020\/01\/hideki_kamiya_thinks_the_switch_home_menu_is_a_piece_of_crap\">his opinion<\/a> on the Switch Home Menu (and Switch fans took to mocking up their own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2020\/01\/hey_nintendo_can_the_next_switch_update_look_something_like_this_please\">theme and folder ideas<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>January games included the excellent <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/reviews\/switch-eshop\/kentucky_route_zero_tv_edition\">Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition<\/a><\/strong>, the also-excellent <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/switch-eshop\/198x\">198X<\/a><\/strong>, and the triply-excellent <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/switch-eshop\/to_the_moon\">To The Moon<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>Most Popular News Article:<\/strong><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2020\/01\/remember_that_zelda_breath_of_the_wild_clone_that_killed_a_ps4_its_coming_to_switch\"><strong>Remember That Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Clone That Killed A PS4? We got <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2020\/03\/watch_nintendo_indie_world_showcase_march_2020_-_live\">an Indie World Showcase<\/a>, the Nintendo PlayStation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2020\/03\/nintendo_playstation_sells_for_significantly_less_than_was_previously_offered\">sold at auction<\/a>, Nintendo hit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2020\/03\/nintendos_request_to_dismiss_joy-con_drift_lawsuit_gets_rejected\">a legal road bump<\/a> in the ongoing Joy-Con drift fiasco, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2020\/03\/ring_fit_adventure_is_so_popular_it_keeps_selling_out\">everyone and their dog<\/a> was trying to get their hands on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/ring_fit_adventure\">Ring Fit Adventure<\/a><\/strong> ahead of lockdown and the gaming event calendar was dealt a significant blow as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2020\/03\/e3_2020_is_officially_cancelled\">E3 2020 was cancelled<\/a> three months out from its planned June slot.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t all bad news in the gaming world, though. The start of April was also filled with customary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2020\/04\/flipnote_april_fools_prank_results_in_immediate_backlash_and_abuse_towards_its_creator\">pranks<\/a>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/super_mario_maker_2\">Super Mario Maker 2<\/a><\/strong> received its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2020\/04\/super_mario_maker_2s_final_major_update_arrives_april_22nd_adds_world_maker_mode_frog_suit_and_koopalings\">&#8216;final&#8217; update<\/a>, thousands of Nintendo accounts were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2020\/04\/nintendo_confirms_that_around_160000_accounts_may_have_been_hacked_personal_info_possibly_at_risk\">reported<\/a> to have been compromised, and Lord of the Rings star and all-round good egg Elijah Wood <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2020\/04\/random_lord_of_the_rings_actor_elijah_wood_visits_animal_crossing_players_island_to_sell_his_turnips\">visited randoms on the internet<\/a> to flog his turnips.<\/p>\n<p>A slew of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/guides\/guide-summer-video-game-events-times-and-dates-for-e3-2020-alternatives-full-conference-list\">Summer 2020 online presentations<\/a> were announced to fill the vacuum left by E3 2020&#8217;s cancellation.
