Launching back in 1996 (or 1997 in PAL regions) as the gaming industry&#8217;s bread-and-butter switched from sprites to polygons, the console represents \u2014 from a certain perspective \u2014 the first time Nintendo really dropped the ball. Tired of the platform holder&#8217;s licencing terms, many developers jumped ship to Sony&#8217;s PlayStation, attracted by fairer deals and cheaper disc-based media. In the meantime, Nintendo doubled down on an esoteric piece of hardware with confusing, kiddy-coloured controllers that were arguably out of step with gaming&#8217;s maturing audience.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, for many gamers the N64 evokes some of our very warmest, strongest gaming memories. It was while brandishing this console&#8217;s three-pronged pad that many of us took our first steps into a three-dimensional Mushroom Kingdom or Hyrule, and the unrivalled excitement of 4-player split-screen <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/n64\/mario_kart_64\">Mario Kart<\/a><\/strong> or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/n64\/goldeneye_007\">GoldenEye<\/a><\/strong> sticks in our mind like few other multiplayer experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Yep, love it or loathe it (<em>how could you?!<\/em>), the erstwhile Ultra 64 hosted some unassailable gaming classics, and with your help we&#8217;d like to rank the top 50 of them.<\/p>\n<p>Last year we put together rankings of the top 50 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2019\/03\/feature_the_50_best_nintendo_3ds_games_of_all_time_-_zelda_pokemon_animal_crossing_and_more\">3DS games<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2019\/07\/feature_best_game_boy_games\">Game Boy games<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2019\/08\/feature_best_nintendo_ds_games\">Nintendo DS games<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2019\/09\/feature_best_gamecube_games\">GameCube games<\/a> \u2014 each one based on the User Ratings from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/browse#games\">Nintendo Life Games database<\/a> \u2014 and now we&#8217;d like to find out the top 50 Nintendo 64 games according to you lovely people.
