Nobody could have predicted just how successful Nintendo&#8217;s main mascot would become, especially 35 years down the line, but here we are, looking at one of the most instantly recognisable faces in gaming and \u2013 <em>arguably<\/em> \u2013 the world.<\/p>\n<p>Super Mario Bros. wasn&#8217;t Mario&#8217;s first gaming appearance, of course \u2013 he originally starred in 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong and 1983&#8217;s Mario Bros. \u2013 but the launch of the classic NES hit is widely regarded to be the true start of his epic journey.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"picture embed right img-\">\n<div class=\"img\"><a title=\"Super Mario Bros. (NES)\" href=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/a3b3c5e4f1188\/super-mario-bros-nes.large.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/a3b3c5e4f1188\/super-mario-bros-nes.130x.jpg\" alt=\"Super Mario Bros. (NES)\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Super Mario Bros. (NES)<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Since then, he&#8217;s gone on to appear in well over 200 games and is still going strong today. Indeed, by our count, he&#8217;ll have starred in 11 games on Switch by the end of the year \u2013 and the console&#8217;s only been out for three-and-a-half years.<\/p>\n<p>As you&#8217;ve no doubt seen already, Nintendo&#8217;s going pretty big with the Mario 35th celebrations this year. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2020\/09\/nintendo_announces_super_mario_remasters_and_much_more_in_super_mario_bros_35th_anniversary_direct\">special Nintendo Direct<\/a> marking the occasion revealed the heavily rumoured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/super_mario_3d_all-stars\"><strong>Super Mario 3D All-Stars<\/strong><\/a> (a compilation of three Mario classics), a new Mario Kart experience in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/mario_kart_live_home_circuit\">Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit<\/a><\/strong>, the gorgeous looking <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/game_and_watch_super_mario_bros\">Game &amp; Watch: Super Mario Bros.<\/a><\/strong> system, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/super_mario_3d_world_plus_bowserrs_fury\">Super Mario 3D World + Bowser\u2019s Fury<\/a><\/strong> (which launches on Switch next year), and lots of other merch and in-game celebrations.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Super Mario 3D Allstars launches next week on 18th September!\" href=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/9405c8b450714\/super-mario-3d-allstars-launches-next-week-on-18th-september.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/9405c8b450714\/super-mario-3d-allstars-launches-next-week-on-18th-september.original.jpg\" alt=\"Super Mario 3D Allstars launches next week on 18th September!\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption\">Super Mario 3D Allstars launches next week on 18th September!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Whether you&#8217;ve played one or one hundred of his games, chances are that if you&#8217;re reading this very site, Mario&#8217;s likely had a relatively sizable impact on your life.
