And I inevitably fail, at least on the brevity side of things.<\/p>\n<p>Before we get started, thanks for the amazing response on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gamediscoverability.substack.com\/p\/help-needed-whats-the-real-steam\">the Steam reviews\/sales ratio survey<\/a>. You\u2019ve still got \u2018til Friday if you want to submit. But we have 220 (!!) responses so far, so it\u2019s going to be a really robust data set. So plenty of range in there, for sure. There\u2019s also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/store\/game-demos\/games\/xbox\">this chart across all game demos on the Microsoft Store<\/a>, which has different results, so YMMV.<\/p>\n<p>Anyhow, Xbox Summerfest is a really nice way to dip into games you might otherwise not have heard of. I played (and enjoyed)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/p\/dandy-ace-demo\/9nb5x1n7g03c?activetab=pivot:overviewtab\">Dandy Ace<\/a>, for example, which I didn\u2019t know existed before.<\/p>\n<p>So I can\u2019t believe it\u2019s anything but positive &#8211; albeit mildly positive, perhaps &#8211; for both players and devs. If you\u2019re in it, tell me what you think of the results. And let\u2019s have it happen once a year for all consoles!&nbsp;<em>*snaps fingers*<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Steam Summer Festival &#8211; the full results!<\/h2>\n<p>So, big shout-out to Chris Zukowski for&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/howtomarketagame.com\/2020\/07\/20\/was-the-steam-summer-festival-worth-it\/\">doing the ultimate write-up of Steam Summer Festival\u2019s results<\/a>, following my slightly more anecdotal comments on the demo showcase a few roundups ago.<\/p>\n<p>Definitely&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/howtomarketagame.com\/2020\/07\/20\/was-the-steam-summer-festival-worth-it\/\">click through<\/a>&nbsp;for the full thing, but the topline appears to be, for those demos that participated:<em>&nbsp;\u201cAverage number of wishlists [added]:&nbsp;3218; Median number of wishlists [added]: 500; Most wishlists earned by a single game: 41096 (<a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/780310\/The_Riftbreaker\/\">The Riftbreaker<\/a>); Fewest wishlists earned by a single game: 40.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One graph I thought particularly relevant &#8211; even beyond the Summer Festival &#8211; was Chris\u2019 calculation of median wishlists additions per genre for surveyed games:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.substack.com\/image\/fetch\/c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fbucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-437e-9518-adb32be77984.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F09f6303f-abb3-42c5-8b50-e48877ba7bcc_1200x742.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt data-attrs=\"{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/bucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-437e-9518-adb32be77984.s3.amazonaws.com\/public\/images\/09f6303f-abb3-42c5-8b50-e48877ba7bcc_1200x742.png&quot;,&quot;height&quot;:742,&quot;width&quot;:1200,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:73788,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image\/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null}\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sickgaming.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/analysis-xbox-demo-fest-blasts-off.png\" width=\"600\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This data maps fairly well to the kind of VERY broad game facets that I would recommend people make for Steam &#8211; to be commercially successful as a small\/medium sized game.<\/p>\n<p>(It\u2019s way more complex than this, of course. And getting deeper into tag comparisons would surface a lot more detail. Here\u2019s the best of the rest, in no particular order:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Would be remiss not to point out the big Xbox\/Series X showcase that happened today . Here\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.xbox.com\/en-us\/2020\/07\/23\/xbox-games-showcase-news-and-announcements\/\">the text round-up<\/a>, here\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/c\/xbox\/videos\">all the trailers<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/cdn-cgi\/l\/email-protection\" class=\"__cf_email__\" data-cfemail=\"074e43475f65687f\">[email&nbsp;protected]<\/a> also announced&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.xbox.com\/en-us\/2020\/07\/23\/15-new-independent-games-coming-first-to-console-on-xbox\/\">some \u2018first to console on Xbox\u2019 indie games<\/a>&nbsp;which I thought notable for you all. These included titles from Annapurna, Raw Fury, Finji, Curve &amp; more. In general, content &amp; outlook \u2018as expected\u2019, though I\u2019ll note Microsoft is pushing Xbox Game Pass&nbsp;<em>hard<\/em>. (Game Pass Ultimate folks&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/07\/16\/microsoft-to-bundle-game-streaming-service-xcloud-with-xbox-game-pass.html\">get xCloud cloud gaming bundled in<\/a>, too, which Stadia may be concerned about.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Got an note from Erik Johnson that he\u2019s been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/erikejohnson\/status\/1285399286029537280\">tracking the number of free games in Steam\u2019s New &amp; Trending<\/a>&nbsp;&#8211; that\u2019s the graph, linked &#8211; and it still seems to be on the upswing. I did get him to clarify from his data, and of the 777 games in those slots in the past few months, 85 of them were free (either just free, or more likely F2P), and 25 of them were \u2018prologues\u2019, i.e. demos. Interesting!<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Good to see&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamesindustry.biz\/articles\/2020-07-13-european-union-sets-limits-on-platform-madness\">European Union regulations introduced for app stores<\/a>&nbsp;(but not PC\/console game stores, sadly!) around ranking transparency, justification for removal of apps, and more. Not convinced this one is a major game-changer, but government regulation &amp; \u2018walled gardens\u2019 are a thing game devs need to pay attention to.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Thought it was funny that I was just&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gamediscoverability.substack.com\/p\/the-surprising-way-that-paid-dlc\">talking about how good paid DLC is<\/a>, and then rhythm RPG Cadence Of Hyrule debuted&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NintendoUK\/status\/1285223318115758085\">a really robust set of 3 DLC (and \u2018season pass\u2019) on Switch<\/a>. Hey, if even Nintendo (and Brace Yourself Games) can get with the program, maybe we should all be paying some attention?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>The second Summer Game Fest-themed&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/dayofthedevs.com\/\">Day Of The Devs<\/a>&nbsp;showcase &#8211; with musical &amp; Keighley prefaces &#8211; took place this week (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2SxzLV9HNZU&amp;t=20m20s\">here\u2019s the video<\/a>). Once again, I thought iam8bit and crew did an amazing job audio-visually and stylistically. But perhaps the announcements were a bit light this time. Petition to have Guerrilla Collective levels of content, but with Day Of The Devs-style curation &amp; presentation for \u2018online E3\u2019 next year, please?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>An anecdote from the very top end of the \u2018games are platforms too\u2019 camp, My former colleague Piers Harding-Rolls&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PiersHR\/status\/1285829272205250560\">notes on Twitter<\/a>&nbsp;that \u2018third party created in Roblox\u2019 game&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/playadopt.me\/games\/adopt-me\/\">Adopt Me<\/a>&nbsp;[pictured]<em>&nbsp;\u201cis now at 50m MAUs up from 30m in March. Around a 3rd of total Roblox MAUs are playing Adopt Me\u2026 Adopt Me studio aiming for 80-100 staff by year end.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>Gosh.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finally, let\u2019s end out with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.codecks.io\/blog\/2020\/curious-expedition-financial-history\/\">this excellent data-filled sales blog<\/a>&nbsp;about \u201cmodest indie hit game&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/358130\/Curious_Expedition\/\">Curious Expedition<\/a>\u201d.
