Staying authentic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Before creating <em>Shine<\/em>, a self-care app that encourages you to \u201caccept who you are today,\u201d co-CEOs Marah Lidey and Naomi Hirabayashi set a few ground rules.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not going to assume you\u2019re working,\u201d says Lidey. \u201cWe\u2019re not going to assume you have or don\u2019t have kids or that you want kids. We\u2019re not going to assume anything about your gender.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Anything that felt \u201cpreachy, pricey, or presumptuous\u201d was off the table too. <\/p>\n<p>That foundation worked. More than 4 million users have signed up for <em>Shine<\/em>, with nearly one in three reviews describing the app as \u201clife-changing,\u201d according to Hirabayashi.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-article-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sickgaming.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/meet-the-developer-shine-1.jpg\" data-hires=\"false\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-caption\">Shine co-CEO Marah Lidey<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>How do Lidey and Hirabayashi know their audience so well? They\u2019re part of it \u2014 and have been for a long time.\u2028\u2028The duo met in 2011 while executives at <em>DoSomething.org<\/em>, a nonprofit that helps young people transform their communities. The two started getting coffee, then lunch, then after-work drinks, creating what Lidey calls a \u201csafe space to process the tough stuff.\u201d \u2028\u2028Over time, they came to see the \u201ctough stuff\u201d in a new light. \u201cWhat we were going through wasn\u2019t weird \u2014 it was human,\u201d says Lidey.\u2028\u2028Shine grew out of their desire to make that safe space bigger, to help others with issues ranging from building a credit score to dealing with giving feedback to employees.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-article-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sickgaming.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/meet-the-developer-shine-2.jpg\" data-hires=\"false\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-caption\">Check in with Shine via its chat interface and the app will serve up articles based on your responses (front). Check out the app\u2019s Quick Hitters for talks tailored to different times of day.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The app launched in 2018 as an \u201caccessible but aspirational\u201d text-based coaching program. Its tone is chatty and friendly, like \u201cthe friend that has a psych degree,\u201d says Hirabayashi. (Shine\u2019s actual psych cred comes from therapist and corporate coach Anna Rowley, who helped develop the curriculum.) Using a chat-based interface, the app helps you see how you see yourself. (Hirabayashi, for her part, is a \u201cCaring Critic\u201d prone to \u201cextending compassion outward, but often struggling to bring that compassion home,\u201d she says.)<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-article-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sickgaming.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/meet-the-developer-shine-3.jpg\" data-hires=\"false\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-caption\">Shine co-CEO Naomi Hirabayashi<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Today the app is rich with features. <em>The Daily Shine<\/em> is a podcast that Hirabayashi describes as a \u201csecular sermon.\u201d Challenges are short, multiday audio courses on specific goals like \u201cBe More Direct\u201d and \u201cLet Yourself Have More Fun.\u201d \u201cNightcap\u201d is a collection of sleep stories that double as winking retellings of 2000s rom-coms (\u201cThe Devil Wears Pajamas\u201d). \u201cThey\u2019re meant to be boring and also a little cheeky,\u201d Lidey says.\u2028\u2028Through all the growth, the pair\u2019s goal has remained the same.
