A super-rare Pok\u00e9mon card has just been sold at auction, causing quite the stir in the world of collecting thanks to its near-legendary status and eye-watering price point.<\/p>\n

The ‘Super Secret Battle \u201cNo. 1 Trainer\u201d Trainer Promo Hologram’ card shown before you is one of the most sought-after cards in the entire Pok\u00e9mon Trading Card Game. Only seven copies of the card were ever made and these were given out to winners of seven regional tournaments. The owners of the cards could use them to gain preferential entrance to a secret game tournament, hence the card\u2019s name.<\/p>\n

As you can imagine, seeing a copy pop up in an online auction is quite the event. On Thursday 9th July, one of the seven copies – which just so happened to be graded ‘Gem Mint 10’, or the finest condition such a card could be sold in – sold for a whopping $90,000 in a public auction held by Heritage Auctions. The final price is reportedly a “record-breaking” sale for the card.<\/p>\n

The artwork is by Hideki Kazama, a Japanese artist whose work has appeared on three trainer cards over the years. The card, with text in Japanese, is translated as such:<\/p>\n

The Pok\u00e9mon Card Game Official Tournament’s champion is recognized here, and this honor is praised. By presenting this card, you may gain preferential entry into the Secret Super Battle.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Of course, we’ve seen other rare cards sell for even higher amounts in the past, including a very special Pikachu card which sold for $195,000<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n
