As happens a bit recently, I started this yesterday and ended up getting so deep into a subject that it\u2019s become a standalone newsletter for next week (hah!)<\/p>\n<p>So here\u2019s the \u2018real\u2019 roundup newsletter, starting with\u2026 this:<\/p>\n<h2>Epic Satisfactory (&amp; Steam!) (That&#8217;s about 39 sales for each review on Steam &#8211; the game has 9,400 reviews right now.) <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gtW5NxY6ni\">https:\/\/t.co\/gtW5NxY6ni<\/a><\/p>\n<p> \u2014 Simon Carless (@simoncarless) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/simoncarless\/status\/1279800446148677633?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 5, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is notable because it\u2019s one of the few Epic Games Store sales numbers ever released. It comes as EGS&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2020\/06\/23\/2052075\/0\/en\/Epic-Games-Store-Partners-with-Battery-and-Havas-Media-for-Creative-and-Media-Duties-for-The-Vault-Free-Game-Campaign.html\">announced 61 million monthly active users<\/a>&nbsp;on PC (and peak concurrent users of 13 million.)<\/p>\n<p>Since you have to log in to EGS to access Fortnite, those MAU\/PCU numbers aren\u2019t necessarily that helpful in themselves. But we do know that third-party games&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vg247.com\/2020\/01\/14\/epic-games-store-free-games-coming-2020-251-million-revenue\/\">had $251 million spent on them<\/a>&nbsp;in 2019 (out of $680 million total spending, including Epic titles.) And it appears that Satisfactory was the #2 selling EGS title last year, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vg247.com\/2020\/01\/14\/epic-games-store-free-games-coming-2020-251-million-revenue\/\">that 2019 infographic<\/a>. So those sales numbers are high-end for EGS.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s guesstimate 8 to 10 million copies of third-party games sold on EGS in 2019. That\u2019s not nothing, if still a fraction of Steam. And Epic\u2019s aggressive \u2018free games\u2019 program must be bringing more users to the platform.<\/p>\n<p>For devs, I still think EGS is a great move if you get an offer, especially with the current model of guaranteed advances, the 88% royalty rate, and lack of games on the store. My only comment: you do lack a little discoverability with an EGS launch, just because Steam is the more established ecosystem with the average streamer, etc.<\/p>\n<p>(But you can still debut on Steam later and pick up \u2018Steam or bust\u2019 gamers, as Satisfactory did. Having a Steam page up to capture wishlists while on EGS is a great way to pick up latent demand, and Epic haters seem less prevalent nowadays.)<\/p>\n<h2>A Mobile Discoverability Follow-Up<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.substack.com\/image\/fetch\/c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fbucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-437e-9518-adb32be77984.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F53b910ac-aeaf-4e9c-abe3-139dc0ac2c6a_800x287.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt data-attrs=\"{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/bucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-437e-9518-adb32be77984.s3.amazonaws.com\/public\/images\/53b910ac-aeaf-4e9c-abe3-139dc0ac2c6a_800x287.jpeg&quot;,&quot;height&quot;:287,&quot;width&quot;:800,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:79823,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image\/jpeg&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null}\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sickgaming.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/analyzing-those-satisfactory-sales-numbers-more-1.jpg\" width=\"600\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to everyone who followed up on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gamediscoverability.substack.com\/p\/mobile-game-discovery-why-its-tricky\">my mobile discoverability post<\/a>&nbsp;from earlier this week. Here\u2019s some extra detail from my follow-up discussions, especially since mobile games are now&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.appannie.com\/en\/insights\/market-data\/mobile-games-generate-1-billion-downloads-each-week\/\">generating 1 billion downloads per week<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Jordan from Hitcents pointed out the model he\u2019s pursuing with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.hitcents.forgottonanne&amp;hl=en_US\">Forgotton Anne on mobile stores<\/a>, which is a free download &amp; in-game IAP to unlock the full game (for $8.) The game\u2019s lush-looking and has great reviews &#8211; it\u2019s doing a 5% conversion rate, with 100% organic traffic. I\u2019ve seen this model on casual games before, but rarely on indies. Not for all, but good incremental revenue, maybe!<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>A couple of folks pointed out you can get independent UA (user acquisition) funding if your F2P title is tuned to be profitable. And indeed that\u2019s true, with big firms like Tilting Point&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/pressreleases\/347429\/TILTING_POINT_TO_INVEST_UP_TO_30_MILLION_IN_UA_FUNDING_FOR_MINOS_CAT_GAME.php\">pumping tens of millions of dollars<\/a>&nbsp;into games that monetize well, and other smaller funding sources out there too. Still, you have to get your F2P mobile game profitable on paid ads first, probably the tricky bit.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Finally, I just wanted to re-iterate &#8211; there\u2019s a LOT of money in F2P mobile games, and they are becoming increasingly creative and interesting to play. There are fascinating genre niches &#8211; check out Ten Square Games, who&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pocketgamer.biz\/news\/73836\/ten-square-games-experiences-its-best-quarter-yet-with-43-million\/\">grossed $40 million in the last quarter<\/a>&nbsp;just from its game&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.tensquaregames.letsfish2&amp;hl=en_US\">Fishing Clash<\/a>&nbsp;(1 million reviews on Google Play!) But you\u2019ve got to have your monetization design down. And for many making their own premium game, that may not be something they want.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Get Discovered In.. The most obvious of these is Roblox, which has a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/developer.roblox.com\/en-us\/quick-start\">robust player-led game dev setup<\/a>, some&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/09\/23\/college-student-video-game-creator-made-millions-from-jailbreak.html\">young devs making a lot of money<\/a>, and a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2019\/12\/09\/robloxs-10-biggest-games-of-all-time-each-with-more-than-a-billion-plays\/\">bunch of games with more than a billion plays<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s also Media Molecule\u2019s Dreams on PlayStation 4 (which isn\u2019t monetizable right now and is more fan\/player-centric, but has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xWBYM-Z8TKI\">some amazing creations<\/a>, given you literally have to use a PS4 controller to make everything in the game.)<\/p>\n<p>The latest platform to add to this list is Core, whose creator Manticore Games&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/manticore-games#section-funding-rounds\">has raised $45 million in VC already<\/a>, and is now&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/core-games\/launching-cores-creator-economy-1-million-is-just-the-start-6a116a78c06\">rolling out its creator economy<\/a>&nbsp;with an initial $1 million in payouts. Here\u2019s their initial pitch:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cEach calendar month, creators in the program can receive $3 per average daily player. This will be calculated by taking the daily number of unique users who log into your games and averaging them across that month.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This means that if you have 500 unique users log into your games every day (they do not need to be the same players) you could receive $1,500 after the end of the month. If you average 1,000 users, you could receive $3,000. If you average 10,000 \u2026 you get the idea.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This seems like a pretty amazing deal, but I think the userbase is still, uhh, arriving &#8211; with just 12,000 players to date for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coregames.com\/games\/577d80\/core-royale\">the Manticore team\u2019s battle royale game<\/a>. Still, it\u2019s interesting, right?<\/p>\n<p>So I\u2019m not sure regular \u2018pro\u2019 game devs should yet try to earn a living on these platforms &#8211; though some such as Jamie Fristrom&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/blogs\/JamieFristrom\/20190718\/346644\/My_Roblox_Years_Dungeon_Life_and_New_Product_Science.php\">have tried on Roblox<\/a>&nbsp;with games like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZsL-Z3z04J8\">Dungeon Life<\/a>&nbsp;&#8211; some fascinating lessons there.<\/p>\n<p>But I think it\u2019s an important trend to watch, because it\u2019s democratizing game dev even further beyond Unity, in some ways. Although perhaps a bit based on VC firms trying to build platform monopolies, bleurgh, but that\u2019s capitalism for you.<\/p>\n<h2>Other things\u2026<\/h2>\n<p>OK, time to polish off this newsletter in style, with a few more links of neat things pointed out to me in the last 7 days. Let\u2019s hit it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Thanks to ICO\u2019s Thomas Bidaux, we have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/icopartners\/state-of-kickstarter-2020-mid-year-update-2b1677ccc8bb\">a state of Kickstarter (not just game Kickstarter) for the first 6 months of 2020<\/a>, and there\u2019s even a tl; dr for us:&nbsp;<em>\u201cThe number of projects launched on the platform has massively dropped [due to COVID-19]. However, a few hits surprisingly mean that the total amount of money raised recently is on par with the amount raised during the same period last year.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Lorenzo Pilia from Maschinen-Mensch (most German company name ever, also the Curious Expedition devs!) recently noted&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LorenzoPilia\/status\/1260211416394596352\">a neat automated way<\/a>&nbsp;the devs did a private Alpha for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/1040230\/Curious_Expedition_2\/\">Curious Expedition 2<\/a>&nbsp;using email to Discord to bug reports &amp; feedback via their project management tool (free for small devs!),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/codecks_io\">Codecks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Two Nintendo Switch things &#8211; firstly, I found someone&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/simoncarless\/status\/1279826866438729728\">using a new visibility hack<\/a>&nbsp;for the eShop charts, which is &#8216;make a paid game free to owners of other specific Switch games, and it still shows on the charts.\u2019 Jeez. And secondly, the Tangle Tower devs were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SFBTom\/status\/1280461063377563649\">kind enough to confirm<\/a>&nbsp;that adding a free Switch demo&nbsp;<em>\u201chas boosted the long tail by about 25%! Not bad for 8 months after the game launched!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>The latest article from Chris Zukowski &#8211; exactly where his skillset is perfect to help indies &#8211; is on&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/howtomarketagame.com\/2020\/07\/06\/how-to-make-your-games-features-more-interesting\/\">how to make your game\u2019s written feature list into benefits<\/a>, rather than a mechanical listing of how many levels the game has. It\u2019s a classic marketing problem that many people fail at!<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Micronotes: Apple confirmed all non-China licensed games&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChundiZhang\/status\/1280803318349074432\">are gone from the App Store<\/a>&nbsp;July 31st, the much-awaited (!) Devolver Direct is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/devolverdigital\/status\/1281600758325141507\">taking place on Saturday, July 11th<\/a>&nbsp;at noon PT, and if you want to see inside Valve (albeit the non-Steam bit), the exhaustive written\/visual doc Half-Life: Alyx: Final Hours is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/1361700\/HalfLife_Alyx__Final_Hours\/\">now out on Steam.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finally, I hope everyone had a decent Steam Summer Sale! From what I\u2019ve heard, there was plenty of buying going on.
