Update (Wed 25th Mar, 2020 09:45 GMT):<\/strong> The reports were true, as new Famitsu data<\/a> (thanks, VGC<\/a>) confirms that Animal Crossing: New Horizons<\/strong><\/a> sold a phenomenal 1.88 million copies in just three days in Japan alone.<\/p>\n

As mentioned in our original article below, this means New Horizons has had the best launch of any Switch game so far in the region, beating the previous record held by Pok\u00e9mon Sword and Shield<\/strong><\/a> (1.3 million in three days) and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate<\/strong><\/a>‘s 1.2 million sales across the same period.<\/p>\n

The 1.88 million total only includes physical sales, so adding (currently unknown) digital sales into the mix will likely be eye-watering.<\/p>\n

Yes, a new Geo Corporation data report (via 4Gamer<\/a>), says that Animal Crossing: New Horizons<\/strong><\/a> has just had the biggest opening weekend of any Switch game in the console’s three-year history in Japan. As noted by VGC<\/a>, this would put the game’s first three days’ sales ahead of Pok\u00e9mon Sword and Shield<\/strong><\/a>‘s total of 1.3 million, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate<\/strong><\/a>‘s tally of 1.2 million.<\/p>\n

The game has also seen tremendous early success in the UK. Our first glimpse of chart data from the UK<\/a> shows that the title went straight to number one, beating all past Animal Crossing games’ launch totals combined.<\/p>\n

Currently, the best-selling Animal Crossing game of all-time worldwide is Animal Crossing: New Leaf<\/strong><\/a>, which had sold 12.45 million copies as of December 2019<\/a>. It might be a little early to say so, but we wouldn’t be at all surprised to see New Horizons eventually soar past this figure.<\/p>\n
