{"id":110363,"date":"2020-03-13T18:24:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-13T18:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/359579"},"modified":"2020-03-13T18:24:00","modified_gmt":"2020-03-13T18:24:00","slug":"dreams-dev-testing-the-waters-of-letting-players-monetize-their-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2020\/03\/13\/dreams-dev-testing-the-waters-of-letting-players-monetize-their-work\/","title":{"rendered":"Dreams dev testing the waters of letting players monetize their work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Media Molecule today opened up a <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.indreams.me\/en\/news\/dreams-beta-evaluation\">special beta program<\/a> for its game-making PS4 game <em>Dreams<\/em> which will allow select players to put their <em>Dreams<\/em> creations to commercial use beyond PlayStation&#8217;s ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>This is an important step for the British studio to take because <em>Dreams<\/em> promises players access to a broad, powerful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/344775\/How_Media_Molecule_designed_a_fun_and_robust_toolset_for_Dreams.php\">game creation toolset<\/a>, yet as of now offers no clear way to share their creations outside of <em>Dreams<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also an opportunity to watch and learn how a major studio handles the consequences of running a game predicated on user-generated content. <em>Dreams&nbsp;<\/em>challenges players to create everything from music to art to full games, and in today&#8217;s blog post detailing the new program studio director Siobhan Reddy admits that the studio is still figuring out how to let players use their&nbsp;<em>Dreams&nbsp;<\/em>creations outside of PlayStation platforms.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019ve had lots of questions from creators about using <em>Dreams <\/em>for viable business opportunities off PlayStation such as concept artwork. We welcome and encourage creators to do this, but it\u2019s new territory for us,&#8221; reads&nbsp;the post.&nbsp;&#8220;We\u2019ve been busy behind the scenes mapping out how we can make it easier for creators to do this in the future. We are kicking this off with a beta evaluation, where creators can submit an application to use <em>Dreams <\/em>for a specific project.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To qualify for this program, creators must be over 18 and have been using&nbsp;<em>Dreams <\/em>to create work during the lengthy &#8220;Early Access&#8221; beta period which preceded its launch last month. Media Molecule says creators will retain the rights to any IP they create, but the studio expects participants to provide regular feedback and (where possible) appropriately credit&nbsp;<em>Dreams&nbsp;<\/em>in the final product(s).
