{"id":110033,"date":"2020-03-06T19:27:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-06T19:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/359249"},"modified":"2020-03-06T19:27:00","modified_gmt":"2020-03-06T19:27:00","slug":"apex-legends-dev-says-forge-stab-and-switch-was-meant-to-foil-data-miners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2020\/03\/06\/apex-legends-dev-says-forge-stab-and-switch-was-meant-to-foil-data-miners\/","title":{"rendered":"Apex Legends dev says Forge stab-and-switch was meant to foil data miners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this year Respawn debuted&nbsp;new playable&nbsp;<em>Apex Legends&nbsp;<\/em>character&nbsp;Revenant with a bit of a bait-and-switch, introducing him as the assassin of Forge, a ringer&nbsp;which design director Jason McCord <a href=\"https:\/\/dotesports.com\/apex-legends\/news\/over-a-year-big-gameplay-changes-create-revenant-apex-design-director-jason-mccord\">told Dot eSports<\/a>&nbsp;was designed explicitly to foil data miners and leakers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It started as a fun way to misdirect data miners who, at the time, felt like they had solved our next legend and had ruined our surprise,\u201d said McCord, who credited the&nbsp;idea to <em>Apex Legends&nbsp;<\/em>designer Rayme Vinson. \u201cWe actually purposefully leaked fake concept art and details of Forge\u2019s kit in patches, so there would be a bread crumb trail by the time we announced him. It\u2019s pretty insane, really. I can\u2019t think of any other game that has gone through such hijinks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a remarkable bit of&nbsp;effort to outwit data miners and, sure enough, it seems many&nbsp;<em>Apex Legends&nbsp;<\/em>players were earnestly surprised by Revenant&#8217;s&nbsp;reveal, presaged by an <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PlayApex\/status\/1221855544119443457?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1221855544119443457&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gamespot.com%2Farticles%2Frevenant-is-taking-forges-place-after-murdering-th%2F1100-6473088%2F\">animated teaser<\/a> in which Forge is murdered mid-interview by the rapacious robot.<\/p>\n<p>The surprise appeared to land even though Revenant&#8217;s existence was leaked ahead of time by said data miners, whose efforts continue to frustrate McCord and other game developers.
