{"id":108854,"date":"2020-02-07T22:23:00","date_gmt":"2020-02-07T22:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/357826"},"modified":"2020-02-07T22:23:00","modified_gmt":"2020-02-07T22:23:00","slug":"check-out-platinumgames-design-doc-for-the-original-the-wonderful-101","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2020\/02\/07\/check-out-platinumgames-design-doc-for-the-original-the-wonderful-101\/","title":{"rendered":"Check out PlatinumGames&#8217; design doc for the original The Wonderful 101"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The folks over at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.siliconera.com\/hideki-kamiya-reveals-the-wonderful-101-design-document\/\">Silconera<\/a> have translated parts of PlatinumGames\u2019 2010 design document from the development of <em>The Wonderful 101<\/em>, a doc released just this month to celebrate the game\u2019s upcoming, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/357547\/PlatinumGames_turns_to_Kickstarter_to_selfpublish_The_Wonderful_101_on_Switch.php\">Kickstarter-funded remaster<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The uploaded pages explore some of the motivations behind the game\u2019s power-in-numbers mechanics, and include modern reflections from PlatinumGames\u2019 Hideki Kamiya on how each of those concepts came together.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Wonderful 101 <\/em>sees a group of characters physically coming together to morph into useful shapes and objects, and puzzles shown in the design doc range from combining strength to move a boulder to joining together to create a massive key to unlock a larger-than-life lock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dI originally got the idea of having a group unite together and form one huge thing from the picture books \u2018Swimmy\u2019 and \u2018Kaibutsu ni Nacchatta\u2019 (I Became a Monster),\u201d writes Kamiya. \u201cI always think up ideas as I create games, but I also often lose my way. In this case, I knew exactly what the core of the game would be right from the start, which is a rare case for me.
