These projects include:\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Designing Astro Socks to protect astronauts\u2019 feet in microgravity:<\/strong>&nbsp;This project&nbsp;has students investigating&nbsp;solutions to reduce the impact of working in microgravity on\u202fthe\u202fastronauts\u2019 feet.\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong>What is the electromagnetic spectrum:&nbsp;<\/strong>This asks&nbsp;students&nbsp;to&nbsp;measure radiation in our environment and examine the light waves and frequencies within the electromagnetic&nbsp;spectrum.&nbsp;Students\u202fuse sensors to capture live data and relate their observations about life in space to their own on Earth.\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Using materials science engineering to determine heat resistance:&nbsp;<\/strong>This&nbsp;asks<strong>\u202f<\/strong>students&nbsp;to explore&nbsp;the properties of different heat shield construction materials\u202fto protect crew and cargo returning from the International Space Station from the heat generated during the capsule\u2019s descent.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These kits will be available on the Carolina<strong>\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carolina.com\/xm\/hacking-stem-lessons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;soon.\u202fWe hope you leverage these resources to inspire, educate and engage your students.\u202f\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Data Streamer<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The<strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/education\/hackingstem\/datastreamer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Excel&nbsp;Data Streamer<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>provides students with a simple way to bring data from the physical world in and out of Excel\u2019s powerful digital canvas. With a sensor connected to a microcontroller that is attached to Excel,&nbsp;you can introduce&nbsp;students to the emerging worlds of data science and the internet of things.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We are continuing\u202fto add key STEM Partners that\u202fsupport streaming of\u202freal time data in Excel using the Data Streamer Add-in. At Bett, Vernier,\u202fPasco\u202fand\u202fSphero\u202fare showcasing new applications integrated with Excel. This will enable educators to use their existing professional sensors and\u202fprobes\u202fwith Excel and modernize their classrooms\u202fwith live data to transform how students model modern scientific and engineering practices.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>An innovation&nbsp;story&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We love hearing stories about educators who use new tech tools in innovative ways to inform instruction and improve teaching and learning. One such story is that of Assistant Principal Lauren Taylor of Manitou Park Elementary School in Tacoma, Washington. Educators are turning to this new tool to enhance&nbsp;key experiences in areas such as life sciences and career and technical education. Some of the upgrades to the new HoloLens include an increased field of view and an enhanced ability to see intricate details on 3D images.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some examples of HoloLens in use in educational settings include Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio, where students use it in anatomy classes.
