The company simply notes that the undisclosed deal \u201csolidifies and reinforces the Company\u2019s relationship with\u201d Sapkowski\u200b and \u201cfully clarifies the requirements and expectations of both parties\u201d with both past and future video games, graphic novels, board games, and merchandise in consideration.<\/p>\n<p>The dispute began when Sapkowski\u200b reached out to CD Projekt&nbsp;in 2018 with the demand that he receive $16 million in additional compensation for the company\u2019s continued use of the property he originally created.<\/p>\n<p>The two parties had originally forged an agreement that allowed for CD Projekt\u2019s legitimate use back in 1997, but at the time Sapkowski\u200b opted for one lump payment rather than a deal that would see him reap continued gains off the series\u2019 success as a video game. He had done so, according to a 2017 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurogamer.net\/articles\/2017-03-24-meeting-andrzej-sapkowski-the-writer-who-created-the-witcher\">Eurogamer interview<\/a>, based on the belief that <em>The Witcher<\/em> games wouldn\u2019t succeed.<\/p>\n<p>As of this summer, CD Projekt Red\u2019s<em> The Witcher <\/em>games have sold <a href=\"https:\/\/comicbook.com\/gaming\/2019\/06\/18\/the-witcher-series-sold-40-million-copies\/\">over 40 million copies<\/a> and, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/354556\/The_Witcher_3_continues_to_sell_well_as_CD_Projekt_reports_rising_revenue.php\">as of last month<\/a>, were cited as the driving forces behind the company\u2019s rising revenue.<\/p>\n<p>If the finalized deal resembles the one that <a href=\"https:\/\/gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/335971\/CD_Projekt_agreed_to_pay_The_Witcher_author_additional_royalties.php\">reportedly started to take form<\/a> earlier this year, Sapkowski\u200b will have received additional compensation for the use and success of his intellectual property, but well under the $16 million originally sought.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CD Projekt and The Witcher&nbsp;author Andrzej Sapkowski have forged an agreement that ensures CD Projekt Red can continue to use Sapkowski\u2019s creation, ending a disagreement that sprung up last year.
