{"id":104849,"date":"2019-12-03T22:47:00","date_gmt":"2019-12-03T22:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/355082"},"modified":"2019-12-03T22:47:00","modified_gmt":"2019-12-03T22:47:00","slug":"campo-santos-in-the-valley-of-the-gods-on-hold-as-team-shifts-to-valve-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2019\/12\/03\/campo-santos-in-the-valley-of-the-gods-on-hold-as-team-shifts-to-valve-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"Campo Santo&#8217;s In the Valley of the Gods on hold as team shifts to Valve projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The project <em>Firewatch<\/em> developer Campo Santo had been working on before being acquired by Valve last year has been officially shelved for the time being as more and more members of that team have instead focused their time on Valve\u2019s upcoming VR game and other projects.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2019\/12\/3\/20994257\/valve-in-the-valley-of-gods-campo-santo-half-life-alyx\">Polygon received a statement<\/a> from Campo Santo co-founder Jake Rodkin after a number of small hints put <em>In the Valley of the Gods<\/em>\u2019 future in question, confirming that it isn\u2019t in active development but \u201ccertainly feels like a project people can and may return to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 12 person team of Campo Santo joined Valve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/316843\/Valve_acquires_Firewatch_creator_Campo_Santo.php\">back in April 2018<\/a>, saying at the time that all team members would keep their current roles and continue work on <em>In the Valley of the Gods <\/em>which had been announced just five months prior. Shortly after, Rodkin explained in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/317858\/Why_the_Campo_Santo_team_hung_up_their_indie_spurs_and_joined_Valve.php\">a conversation with Rock Paper Shotgun<\/a>&nbsp;that the decision allowed the team to shift their focus back to game development and away from the day-to-day obligations that come with running a business.<\/p>\n<p>In this latest&nbsp;statement&nbsp;(found in full on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2019\/12\/3\/20994257\/valve-in-the-valley-of-gods-campo-santo-half-life-alyx\">Polygon<\/a>), Rodkin says that the developers that came over with Campo Santo took advantage of Valve\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/291925\/Gabe_Newell_discusses_the_downsides_of_working_at_Valve.php\">unique studio structure<\/a> to contribute to projects like<em> Half-Life: Alyx<\/em>, due out in March, the Valve team already had in the works, and putting <em>In the Valley of the Gods<\/em> on hold in the process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou hear a lot about how at Valve you can work on what you want. It turns out that\u2019s true, and there\u2019s a lot of work available,&#8221; says&nbsp;Rodkin. &#8220;As we integrated ourselves into Valve it became clear there was a lot of valuable work to be done on&nbsp;<em>Half-Life: Alyx<\/em>.
