Squeezing itself in before Pok\u00e9mon chatter turns to Sword and Shield\u2019s release next week, and hot on the heels of the Halloween and \u2018Colossal Discovery\u2019 events, Niantic have put live another new event. This time, it\u2019s the turn of the game\u2019s Team GO Rocket battles to take centre stage \u2013 defeat grunts and track the leaders of this shadowy organisation with our guide to the new mechanics and the newly available special research quest \u2018Looming in the Shadows\u2019.<\/p>\n<h2>What\u2019s Happening?<\/h2>\n<p>The next step of Team GO Rocket\u2019s invasion has begun \u2013 after several months of Team GO Rocket occupations of Pok\u00e9Stops worldwide, the evil team\u2019s leaders have finally appeared for you to fight. Look out for the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Team GO Rocket Grunts can now drop \u2018<strong>Mysterious Components\u2019<\/strong> once defeated<\/li>\n<li>Collect 6 \u2018Mysterious Components\u2019 to create a <strong>\u2018Rocket Radar\u2019<\/strong> that will locate one of the leaders of Team GO Rocket \u2013 Arlo, Cliff and Sierra<\/li>\n<li><strong>New Special Research available \u2013 \u2018Looming in the Shadows\u2019<\/strong> (see our Walkthrough below)\n<ul>\n<li>Follow the Special Research questline and you\u2019ll receive a <strong>Super Rocket Radar<\/strong> capable of locating famed Pok\u00e9mon evil team leader (and part-time Gym owner) <strong>Giovanni<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Once Giovanni is defeated, Niantic are teasing a chance to rescue \u2018a <strong>Legendary Shadow Pok\u00e9mon<\/strong>\u2019<\/li>\n<li>The list of Shadow Pok\u00e9mon that Team GO Rocket Grunts may hold has expanded (Sandshrew, Bellspout, Magnemite, Porygon and Wobbuffet)<\/li>\n<li>Increased spawns for Pok\u00e9mon associated with Team Rocket (such as Ekans, Meowth and Koffing) as well as similar themed Raids will run until 1pm PST on Thursday November 14<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This follows several weeks of teases from Niantic in which the game\u2019s social channels and websites have featured story snippets involving Professor Willow and Team Leaders Blanche, Candela and Spark tracking down details of Team GO Rocket\u2019s leadership. This culminated in the appearance of \u2018mysterious component\u2019 drops in a small number of cities (London in the UK, Atlanta, Austin and San Francisco in the US) on 6 November before a global rollout on 7 November.<\/p>\n<h2>What are Mysterious Components and How Do I Find Them?<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"01 Mysteriouscomponents Screenshots\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/95f0430ce57e4\/01-mysteriouscomponents-screenshots.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/95f0430ce57e4\/01-mysteriouscomponents-screenshots.900x.jpg\" alt=\"01 Mysteriouscomponents Screenshots\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Theorised by Professor Willow to be the devices that help Team GO Rocket grunts to take over Pok\u00e9Stops, these purple-screened \u2018mysterious components\u2019 can now be dropped by any grunts you fight at infected Pok\u00e9Stops \u2013 the darkened stops that shake as if \u2018glitched out\u2019 on the Pok\u00e9mon GO map (find out more in our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2019\/07\/guide_pokemon_go_team_rocket_-_how_to_beat_infected_pokestops_and_purify_shadow_pokemon\">guide to infected Pok\u00e9Stops<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2>How to Find Team GO Rocket Leaders Using Rocket Radars<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"02 Rocketradar Screenshots\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/2613965fafb45\/02-rocketradar-screenshots.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/2613965fafb45\/02-rocketradar-screenshots.900x.jpg\" alt=\"02 Rocketradar Screenshots\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Collect six mysterious components, and you will be prompted to turn them into a \u2018Mysterious Device\u2019\/Rocket Radar \u2013 a machine capable of locating a Team GO Rocket leader.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Once constructed, the Rocket Radar will then be added to the upper right of your map screen (see left image above)<\/li>\n<li>Tap the Rocket Radar icon and you will access a new new map view (middle image, above)\n<ul>\n<li>On this new map view, you will be able to see Pok\u00e9stops occupied by a Team GO Rocket leader, indicated by a red \u2018R\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>This map lacks Pok\u00e9Stop\/Gym icons or other landmarks &#8211; challenging you to work out the street layout for yourself<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>On the normal game map, the Pok\u00e9Stop you&#8217;re searching for will appear to be normal &#8211; when you walk close enough, the Pok\u00e9Stop will turn Black and the leader occupying the Pok\u00e9stop will appear (right image, above)<\/li>\n<li>In the event that there are no leaders near your current location, the game will prompt you to search elsewhere\/at another time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note that you can only hold one Rocket Radar at a time, and will not collect more Mysterious Components until you have beaten the leader.<\/strong> The radar is not consumed until this point &#8211; you are free to re-challenge the leader as many times as necessary, or indeed, go in search of another leader.<\/p>\n<h2>Team GO Rocket Leader Guide<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"0x Team Go Rocket Leaders Screenshots\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/3b324a2dc6f1c\/0x-team-go-rocket-leaders-screenshots.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/3b324a2dc6f1c\/0x-team-go-rocket-leaders-screenshots.900x.jpg\" alt=\"0x Team Go Rocket Leaders Screenshots\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Once you have located a Rocket Leader\u2019s base, you will have the opportunity to battle them for some nice rewards. You\u2019ll also have to win 5 raids (any level) and purify 15 shadow Pok\u00e9mon \u2013 which means finding 15 infected Pok\u00e9Stops, assuming you don\u2019t already have unpurified shadow Pok\u00e9mon in your collection.<\/p>\n<h3>Steps 3 to 6<\/h3>\n<p>The 5-day Pok\u00e9Stop spin requirement for step two will keep the GO community from progressing in the quest until at least 11 November \u2013 check back then to discover what you\u2019ll need to do next.<\/p>\n<p>Niantic\u2019s press-release teases does contain some glimpses of what to expect \u2013 not only will you apparently develop a Super Rocket Radar capable of locating Giovanni, but you can expect grunts to impersonate him to throw you off the scent. The ultimate reward will apparently be some kind of Legendary Shadow Pok\u00e9mon \u2013 could we perhaps see the return of Shadow Mewtwo (Pokk\u00e9n Tournament), Shadow Lugia (Pok\u00e9mon XD: Gale of Darkness), or just as likely, something entirely different?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A word of caution:<\/strong> we expect that subsequent steps will involve fighting the Team GO Rocket leaders, Cliff, Sierra, Arlo and Giovanni himself. This process will likely mean gathering Mysterious Components and assembling Rocket Radars.
