{"id":102591,"date":"2019-10-25T16:55:00","date_gmt":"2019-10-25T16:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/352909"},"modified":"2019-10-25T16:55:00","modified_gmt":"2019-10-25T16:55:00","slug":"new-budget-ends-idm-tax-credit-for-video-game-studios-in-alberta-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2019\/10\/25\/new-budget-ends-idm-tax-credit-for-video-game-studios-in-alberta-canada\/","title":{"rendered":"New budget ends IDM tax credit for video game studios in Alberta, Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 2019-23&nbsp;budget revealed by Alberta\u2019s United Conservative Party government this week eliminates the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alberta.ca\/interactive-digital-media-tax-credit.aspx\">Interactive Digital Media Tax Credit<\/a>, a program that aimed to encourage the growth of Alberta\u2019s game industry through a refundable tax credit.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/calgaryherald.com\/news\/five-business-tax-credits-scrapped-ucp-abandons-targeted-programs-in-favour-of-lower-corporate-taxes\">Calgary Herald<\/a>, the Interactive Digital Media Tax Credit is one of five business tax credits completely eliminated in the budget.<\/p>\n<p>In that plan, the&nbsp;UCP suggests choosing to instead lower the corporate tax rate by 4 percent over the next several years will yield better results in job creation and economic growth than focused, industry-specific tax credits.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Set up in 2018, the Interactive Digital Media Tax Credit offered game studios operating out of Alberta a 25 percent refundable tax credit for labor costs, along with an additional tax credit of up to 5 percent for teams that participated in an optional diversity and inclusion program.
