Decades before its move towards video games, the firm was going through some internal struggles, which led to its third president,\u00a0Hiroshi Yamauchi, transforming the company with a raft of new reforms.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"object object-tweet\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p><span lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">May 25, 1955 &#8211; Nintendo employees on a hunger strike against the new president&#8217;s decision to relocate factory and layoffs. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MotherBrain?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MotherBrain<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/SRhbNQNGdn\">pic.twitter.com\/SRhbNQNGdn<\/a><\/span>\u2014 Nintendo Memories (@NintendoMemo) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NintendoMemo\/status\/951557858180640768?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 11, 2018<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Those reforms, which were <a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/why-nintendo-employees-went-on-a-hunger-strike-1822017097?utm_campaign=Socialflow_Kotaku_Twitter&amp;utm_source=Kotaku_Twitter&amp;utm_medium=Socialflow\">brought to light in a recent article by Kotaku<\/a> (and expanded upon in the book\u00a0<strong>The History of Nintendo: 1889-1980<\/strong>), saw Yamauchi close some factories down in an attempt to centralise Nintendo&#8217;s output. The company&#8217;s labour union wasn&#8217;t happy about this upheaval, eventually leading to it to go on hunger strike in protest. Yamauchi refused to back down, and eventually the protest fizzled out.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a odd little piece of Nintendo history, but it shows you just how much the company has changed over the years.
