You should head north out of Mabe village, past the ledge above a well (jump inside for a <u>Heart Piece<\/u>) to enter the Mysterious Forest.<\/p>\n<p>Before you go:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Consider starting those steps of the game\u2019s compulsory <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2019\/09\/guide_the_legend_of_zelda_linkrs_awakening_walkthrough_index_and_part_one_-_mabe_village#the-linkrs-awakening-trading-sequence-part-one-n-yoshi-doll-ribbon-dog-food-and-bananas\">trading sequence<\/a> you can already complete<\/li>\n<li>Visit the Mabe Village shop (house to the east with a shield sign above it) to buy some bombs (not essential at this stage, but can be used in the upcoming dungeon)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link reads a sign saying he has arrived at the Mysterious Forest\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/35be54e46b063\/link-reads-a-sign-saying-he-has-arrived-at-the-mysterious-forest.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/35be54e46b063\/link-reads-a-sign-saying-he-has-arrived-at-the-mysterious-forest.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link reads a sign saying he has arrived at the Mysterious Forest\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Inside the Mysterious Forest you will be stopped again by the Owl with some words of wisdom:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Hoot! Ho, brave lad, on your quest to wake the dreamer! Welcome to the Mysterious Forest!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2026By the by, have you ever visited the <strong>Tail Cave<\/strong>, which is <strong>south of the village<\/strong>?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Go there with the <strong>key<\/strong> you find in this forest\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Wind Fish is watching\u2026 Hoot!<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link is taunted by an obstructive Raccoon\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/e98818c826e6e\/link-is-taunted-by-an-obstructive-raccoon.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/e98818c826e6e\/link-is-taunted-by-an-obstructive-raccoon.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link is taunted by an obstructive Raccoon\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Take the path north and then right, fighting the moblins you encounter (put your shield up to deflect their spear throws, then strike them with your sword). Turn north to a little clearing and speak to the Raccoon: Remember his words \u2013 you\u2019ll need to know his weakness later.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAs a raccoon, my nose is verrry sensitive ta stuff like dust and powder\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Explore around the forest and you\u2019ll be unable to find the elusive key \u2013 when heading north from the Raccoon he will taunt you and you will find only a fairy fountain \u2013 an opportunity to heal up and work on getting your own back on the Raccoon<\/p>\n<h4>Getting Rid of the Raccoon with a Sleepy Toadstool<\/h4>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link reads a sign about crumbling floors\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/55008ea914867\/link-reads-a-sign-about-crumbling-floors.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/55008ea914867\/link-reads-a-sign-about-crumbling-floors.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link reads a sign about crumbling floors\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>From the Raccoon\u2019s words you\u2019ll understand that the solution here is something to do with \u201cdust and powder\u201d \u2013 as it happens, a witch in Koholint Prairie (accessible to the northeast) can make you some Magic Powder from a type of mushroom in the forest. The mushroom \u2013 the Sleepy Toadstool \u2013 can be picked up from an area in the woods accessed through a hollow log.<\/p>\n<p>To get to the log from the fairy fountain, turn east and then south (Alternatively, head south from the Raccoon\u2019s clearing and take a turn east on a narrow path between the line of trees.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link smashes purple rocks to access a chest\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/89461d5722bf2\/link-smashes-purple-rocks-to-access-a-chest.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/89461d5722bf2\/link-smashes-purple-rocks-to-access-a-chest.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link smashes purple rocks to access a chest\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Enter the log and you emerge into a cave. Dispatch the Keese (bats), smash the purple rocks and push the grey rock to access the chest for 50 rupees. Exit north (taking care not to stay too long on the cracks on the floor \u2013 otherwise you\u2019ll fall through!) and follow the passage round to emerge into a room with lots of round rocks.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link contemplates a block puzzle\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/a3810261ec6cf\/link-contemplates-a-block-puzzle.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/a3810261ec6cf\/link-contemplates-a-block-puzzle.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link contemplates a block puzzle\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Unfortunately the <u>Heart Piece<\/u> in this room is inaccessible for the time being (the skulls must be lifted and thrown \u2013 consider dropping a pin on the game\u2019s map to remember this for later). For now, push two round rocks down to make a path to the south exit.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link poised to pick up a toadstool\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/94de8cbc3b40b\/link-poised-to-pick-up-a-toadstool.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/94de8cbc3b40b\/link-poised-to-pick-up-a-toadstool.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link poised to pick up a toadstool\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Emerge from the log and deal with the sword and shield moblins by readying your shield \u2013 when they attack they will bounce off and leave you an opening to get a sword hit in. The ingredient you need for the Magic Powder (the Sleepy Toadstool) can be seen to the left \u2013 pick it up.<\/p>\n<h4>Visiting the Witch on Koholint Prairie for Magic Powder<\/h4>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link wonders how he's going to get back through a block puzzle\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/451144a2cb18d\/link-wonders-how-hes-going-to-get-back-through-a-block-puzzle.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/451144a2cb18d\/link-wonders-how-hes-going-to-get-back-through-a-block-puzzle.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link wonders how he's going to get back through a block puzzle\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Now it\u2019s time to turn your Sleepy Toadstool into the Magic Powder you need to get rid of that pesky Raccoon. Run with us back through the cave you came through (push the lower right rock up one space, and then the rightmost rock up two spaces).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link finds the route to Koholint Prairie\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/13d15ccfddf63\/link-finds-the-route-to-koholint-prairie.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/13d15ccfddf63\/link-finds-the-route-to-koholint-prairie.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link finds the route to Koholint Prairie\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Head to the northeast of the Mysterious Forest \u2013 there is an exit here to Koholint Prairie. If you\u2019re having trouble finding the route, head north from the log\/cave network entrance and then east once you find the log behind the three stones (pictured above).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link enters Koholint Prairie\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/62b54891df50c\/link-enters-koholint-prairie.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/62b54891df50c\/link-enters-koholint-prairie.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link enters Koholint Prairie\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Emerge onto Koholint Prairie and follow the path south. Sidestep the monsters here for now.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link finds the Witch's house\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/f1a0043230533\/link-finds-the-witchs-house.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/f1a0043230533\/link-finds-the-witchs-house.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link finds the Witch's house\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>At the end of the trail you find a witch\u2019s home within some suitably spooky trees \u2013 step inside.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Exchanging the Toadstool for the Magic Powder\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/8905a48f20238\/exchanging-the-toadstool-for-the-magic-powder.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/8905a48f20238\/exchanging-the-toadstool-for-the-magic-powder.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Exchanging the Toadstool for the Magic Powder\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>The witch quickly notices that you\u2019ve picked up the Sleepy Toadstool in the woods (if you haven\u2019t, see the section above). She\u2019ll give you some magic powder for your troubles. As prompted, equip the powder to your X or Y button in your inventory (+).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Using the Magic Powder on the Raccoon\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/732f57e2a6d59\/using-the-magic-powder-on-the-raccoon.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/732f57e2a6d59\/using-the-magic-powder-on-the-raccoon.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Using the Magic Powder on the Raccoon\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Return to the clearing and throw some Magic Powder on the Raccoon \u2013 that\u2019ll teach him for blabbing about his weakness! Suddenly he twirls out of control and turns into Marin\u2019s father Tarin.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link obtains the Tail Key\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/94756fd8f7416\/link-obtains-the-tail-key.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/94756fd8f7416\/link-obtains-the-tail-key.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link obtains the Tail Key\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Head north from Tarin and instead of the fairy fountain, you will finally find the treasure chest containing the Tail Key \u2013 you can now use it to open up the Tail Cave gate.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tail-cave-walkthrough\">Tail Cave Walkthrough<\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"getting-to-tail-cave\">Getting to Tail Cave<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Route to Tail Cave - turning below the treeline\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/a6c0aceff1eb0\/route-to-tail-cave-turning-below-the-treeline.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/a6c0aceff1eb0\/route-to-tail-cave-turning-below-the-treeline.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Route to Tail Cave - turning below the treeline\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Return to Mabe Village \u2013 consider stopping off for some items in the village shop or have a few tries at the Trendy Game if you\u2019ve got Rupees to spend.<\/p>\n<p>Take the southern exit from the village &#8211; instead of following the path down the cliffs to the beach, head east (right) immediately after the tree-line.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Route to Tail Cave - turning south\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/9c33a8eaad5c7\/route-to-tail-cave-turning-south.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/9c33a8eaad5c7\/route-to-tail-cave-turning-south.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Route to Tail Cave - turning south\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Continue following the path directly below Mabe Village until you are forced to turn south.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Tail Cave entrance\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/be2ab49baa24f\/tail-cave-entrance.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/be2ab49baa24f\/tail-cave-entrance.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Tail Cave entrance\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Follow the route to its end and you\u2019ll arrive at Tail Cave &#8211; walk up to the middle statue and press A to insert the Tail Key. Head inside once you\u2019re ready to tackle the game\u2019s first dungeon\u2026<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"tail-cave-locating-the-compass\">Tail Cave: Locating the Compass<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Tail Cave first room\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/2b100b3684b9e\/tail-cave-first-room.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/2b100b3684b9e\/tail-cave-first-room.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Tail Cave first room\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>The first room of the Tail Cave gives you the option of heading left or directly forwards \u2013 left is a deadend with a couple of critical items, so head there first.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Tail cave small key puzzle room\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/05682a58061ed\/tail-cave-small-key-puzzle-room.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/05682a58061ed\/tail-cave-small-key-puzzle-room.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Tail cave small key puzzle room\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>The Hardhat Beetle in the next room cannot be directly damaged with your sword \u2013 however, it can be pushed around with either your sword or shield \u2013 push it off the edges of the walkway and a Small Key will drop on the paved tile on the left \u2013 pick it up. Now continue to head left.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link obtains the Tail Cave compass\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/e00ff64e8a9ac\/link-obtains-the-tail-cave-compass.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/e00ff64e8a9ac\/link-obtains-the-tail-cave-compass.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link obtains the Tail Cave compass\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>The door slams shut as you enter the next room \u2013 defeat the Buzz Blobs (green blob enemies) to unlock the door. Open the chest and pick up the compass \u2013 within its dungeon the compass:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Adds the location of all chests to the map<\/li>\n<li>Adds the location of the Nightmare (the dungeon\u2019s main boss) to the map<\/li>\n<li>Plays a tone when you are \u2018near\u2019 a key \u2013 it will usually be found in a nearby chest or (as in the previous room) will drop from the ceiling when certain conditions are met<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your business concluded down this little cul-de-sac, return to the Tail Cave\u2019s entrance.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"tail-cave-retrieving-the-dungeon-map\">Tail Cave: Retrieving the Dungeon Map<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link obtains another small key in Tail Cave\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/d48f0faba9d90\/link-obtains-another-small-key-in-tail-cave.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/d48f0faba9d90\/link-obtains-another-small-key-in-tail-cave.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link obtains another small key in Tail Cave\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Head north \u2013 clear the room of enemies and step on the button to reveal a chest \u2013 inside is another Small Key. Exit using the passage on the right.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link defeats enemies to claim Tail Cave dungeon map\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/0c422b50097fa\/link-defeats-enemies-to-claim-tail-cave-dungeon-map.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/0c422b50097fa\/link-defeats-enemies-to-claim-tail-cave-dungeon-map.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link defeats enemies to claim Tail Cave dungeon map\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>In this room you\u2019ll find two Keese (bats) and two Stalfos (skeletons). The latter will jump out of the way of your sword attacks \u2013 either back them against a wall or charge your sword attack (hold B) to do damage. Clear the room and a chest will appear \u2013 containing the Dungeon Map.<\/p>\n<p>Though you can go through a one-way door the north, in the interests of visiting every room, return back the way you came and take the left exit this time. Dispatch the four Keese and exit to the north (smash the purple rocks as you enter).<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"tail-cave-acquiring-the-stone-beak\">Tail Cave: Acquiring the Stone Beak<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Main hub room lower right corner\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/8337896d15c77\/main-hub-room-lower-right-corner.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/8337896d15c77\/main-hub-room-lower-right-corner.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Main hub room lower right corner\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>The room to the north is a large hub of sorts for the dungeon, with several exits and other things to accomplish.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The chest in the middle of the room contains a small key for your collection<\/li>\n<li>Kill both of the Mini-Moldorms in the room (the yellow worm-like enemy) and a hidden chest with 20 rupees will appear<\/li>\n<li>Use a bomb on the cracked wall in the bottom left to locate a <u>Secret Seashell<\/u><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For now, head to the lower right corner of the room and open the locked door with one of your small keys. In the next room use the north exit to enter a room with a green-tiled floor.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Green tiled room puzzle\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/e4ffbce36d8ef\/green-tiled-room-puzzle.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/e4ffbce36d8ef\/green-tiled-room-puzzle.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Green tiled room puzzle\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>The enemies in this room (Three-of-a-Kind) display a succession of playing card symbols \u2013 the goal is to get them to stop on the symbol. Swing your sword to make them stop. Once all symbols match, a chest will spawn containing a <strong>stone beak<\/strong> which can be placed in the various owl statues around the dungeon. Try it on the one in this room and it\u2019ll say:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cTurn aside the spined ones with a shield\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 id=\"tail-cave-retrieving-rocrs-feather\">Tail Cave: Retrieving Roc\u2019s Feather<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Dodging moving blade trap in main hub of Tail Cave\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/9942d9b21ee8c\/dodging-moving-blade-trap-in-main-hub-of-tail-cave.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/9942d9b21ee8c\/dodging-moving-blade-trap-in-main-hub-of-tail-cave.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Dodging moving blade trap in main hub of Tail Cave\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Return to the main hub room and head to the top left corner. Approach the moving blade trap and stop before you trigger it \u2013 as it slowly returns to place, move towards the locked door and use a small key.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Moving block puzzle Tail Cave\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/cd713c1d0b1e3\/moving-block-puzzle-tail-cave.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/cd713c1d0b1e3\/moving-block-puzzle-tail-cave.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Moving block puzzle Tail Cave\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>You enter a long room \u2013 take an anti-clockwise route to the upper left corner and place the Stone Beak in the Owl Statue for a message:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cIf there is a door that you can\u2019t open move a square block\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The message is useful to remember at several points in Link\u2019s Awakening, but here it\u2019s asking you to consider your immediate surroundings \u2013 isn\u2019t that leftmost block just screaming to be pushed into a zig-zag pattern with its neighbours? Give it a push to the right and the door in the left wall will open. Go on through.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Pushing the spiny ones aside in Tail Cave\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/ace99dcc44a73\/pushing-the-spiny-ones-aside-in-tail-cave.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/ace99dcc44a73\/pushing-the-spiny-ones-aside-in-tail-cave.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Pushing the spiny ones aside in Tail Cave\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>In the next room you will find a couple of Spiked Beetle enemies \u2013 hit them with your sword and you\u2019ll do no damage. However, you may remember (and the nearby Owl Statue will remind you) that you can \u201cTurn aside the spined ones with a shield\u2026\u201d \u2013 put your shield up with R and push those enemies into a pit!<\/p>\n<p>Once the room is clear of enemies, a set of stairs appears in the upper right of the room. Head down and you\u2019ll find yourself in a side-scrolling section with some enemies that will be familiar to any Mario players in the audience (that\u2019ll be everyone then) &#8211; Goombas. Traverse this room and climb the ladder to the next area.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Roc's Feather chest Tail Cave\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/e90f924967279\/rocs-feather-chest-tail-cave.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/e90f924967279\/rocs-feather-chest-tail-cave.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Roc's Feather chest Tail Cave\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Head north and dodge the blade traps \u2013 open the chest for the Tail Cave\u2019s main treasure \u2013 Roc\u2019s Feather. Open your inventory (+) and equip the feather to the X or Y buttons \u2013 this handy item will allow you to jump over gaps \u2013 hugely useful throughout the game.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"tail-cave-finding-the-nightmare-key\">Tail Cave: Finding The Nightmare Key<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Lock Block in Tail Cave before Nightmare Key\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/e375a5a6bc50e\/lock-block-in-tail-cave-before-nightmare-key.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/e375a5a6bc50e\/lock-block-in-tail-cave-before-nightmare-key.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Lock Block in Tail Cave before Nightmare Key\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Return to the large hub room and head to the northeast corner. With Roc\u2019s Feather equipped you can now hop over the gap \u2013 use a small key on the lock block, climb the stairs and open the chest \u2013 inside you\u2019ll find the Nightmare Key, necessary for accessing Moldorm\u2019s battle arena.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"tail-cave-fighting-the-rolling-bones-miniboss\">Tail Cave: Fighting The Rolling Bones Miniboss<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Jumping the gap to access miniboss\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/54563189790fe\/jumping-the-gap-to-access-miniboss.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/54563189790fe\/jumping-the-gap-to-access-miniboss.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Jumping the gap to access miniboss\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Before you fight Moldorm, you must first deal with a miniboss \u2013 Rolling Bones. Exit the large hub room using the southeastern door (the one you took on the way to the room with the green-tiled floor). Jump the gap in the first room with Roc\u2019s Feather and head through the door.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Tail cave miniboss battle\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/86bbe32fc60e3\/tail-cave-miniboss-battle.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/86bbe32fc60e3\/tail-cave-miniboss-battle.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Tail cave miniboss battle\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Rolling Bones is a simple boss to help get you comfortable with using Roc\u2019s Feather. He rolls a spiked beam across the length of the room \u2013 jump it and get as many Sword swipes (or charges) in as you can before he jumps back on the other side. Repeat until he is defeated. A blue portal will open linking to the entrance \u2013 handy if you\u2019re worried about health or want to pick up some supplies. Once you\u2019re ready, head out of the top exit.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"tail-cave-defeating-the-nightmaredungeon-boss-moldorm\">Tail Cave: Defeating the Nightmare\/Dungeon Boss Moldorm<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Tail Cave Moldorm antechamber\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/0c1a26a9bee4e\/tail-cave-moldorm-antechamber.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/0c1a26a9bee4e\/tail-cave-moldorm-antechamber.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Tail Cave Moldorm antechamber\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Head towards the boss door taking care to avoid the blade traps in the next room. The stairs here lead to the dungeon you can fall into when fighting the boss \u2013 there\u2019s not really a reason to head there for the time being.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Tail Cave dungeon boss Moldorm\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/7483c61d6c193\/tail-cave-dungeon-boss-moldorm.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/7483c61d6c193\/tail-cave-dungeon-boss-moldorm.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Tail Cave dungeon boss Moldorm\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Muldorm\u2019s weakness should be immediately apparent \u2013 the glowing orb on his tail invites a good whack with a sword. Nonetheless, his relatively high speed, erratic movements, and generous knock-back can cause problems, and with few hearts this early in the game don\u2019t be too dismayed if he gets the best of you. Just try your best to keep your distance when the weak spot isn\u2019t exposed and anticipate the semi-circular shapes he typically moves in when approaching to strike.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link obtains the Full Moon Cello\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/58fcfe6cbd45c\/link-obtains-the-full-moon-cello.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/58fcfe6cbd45c\/link-obtains-the-full-moon-cello.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link obtains the Full Moon Cello\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Four hits will end him: you will be rewarded with a Heart Container and the first of the instruments needed to wake the Wind Fish (The Full Moon Cello).<\/p>\n<p>The screen will fade to white with some cryptic words hinting at your next steps, before depositing you back outside the Tail Cave<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u2026SWAMP\u2026<br \/><\/em><em>A path opens\u2026 in the blooms\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<aside class=\"related\">\n<h2 class=\"heading\">Are you finding this guide useful?
