She suggests that you head to the beach and warns you about the increased monster activity that has accompanied your arrival \u2013 in this opening section you\u2019re going to need to locate a sword and shield so you can safely make your way across the island.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Tarin gives Link his shield\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/91cef075e223c\/tarin-gives-link-his-shield.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/91cef075e223c\/tarin-gives-link-his-shield.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Tarin gives Link his shield\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Your shield is thankfully very simple to find \u2013 simply talk to Tarin to get it back. In the Switch version it\u2019ll always be equipped on the R button from now on, and it will keep you safe from various monsters on the way to the beach and beyond.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link steps outside of Marin's house\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/b510c883286ce\/link-steps-outside-of-marins-house.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/b510c883286ce\/link-steps-outside-of-marins-house.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link steps outside of Marin's house\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Step outside the house \u2013 welcome to Mabe Village. Take this opportunity to explore and familiarise yourself with the layout and the residents, including (clockwise from north):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Weather vane:<\/strong> directly north Marin\u2019s house. A key location later in the game, Marin can often be found singing here<\/li>\n<li><strong>Quadruplets house:<\/strong> a two-entranced house you\u2019ll visit as part of the item quest, located on the cliffs at the northeastern edge of the town<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cave and northeast exit:<\/strong> there\u2019s nothing to see here for the time-being<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tool shop:<\/strong> shop selling various items including a shovel (for secret seashells) and a heart piece. Located north east of Marin\u2019s house<\/li>\n<li><strong>Telephone booth<\/strong>: directly south of Marin\u2019s house. These booths are littered across the island and dispense hints about what you should be doing next<\/li>\n<li><strong>Trendy Game<\/strong>: a shack in the south east corner with a claw game &#8211; win various items including a Yoshi doll (a trading quest item) and a heart piece. 10 rupees a go<\/li>\n<li><strong>Old Man\u2019s Ulrira\u2019s House:<\/strong> residence of the telephone booth operator, southwest of Marin\u2019s house \u2013 doesn\u2019t have much to say in person<\/li>\n<li><strong>Path to beach:<\/strong> route in the southwest of the village \u2013 your next destination<\/li>\n<li><strong>Library:<\/strong> contains books that explain basic controls, a map of the island and a hint about an essential item for the late game<\/li>\n<li><strong>Well:<\/strong> convenient hole in the west you can\u2019t wait to throw yourself into<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mysterious Forest:<\/strong> access via the north west &#8211; where you\u2019ll be heading after the beach<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fishing hole:<\/strong> Area in the north where you can play a fishing minigame<\/li>\n<li><strong>Madam MeowMeow\u2019s House:<\/strong> house in the middle of the village with a Chain Chomp tied up outside<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link drops down a ledge on the way to the beach\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/fab074986eeab\/link-drops-down-a-ledge-on-the-way-to-the-beach.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/fab074986eeab\/link-drops-down-a-ledge-on-the-way-to-the-beach.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link drops down a ledge on the way to the beach\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>When you\u2019re ready, head south out of the village as per Marin\u2019s suggestion:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cFollow the lane south to reach the beach where I found you.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Note that you can quickly drop off ledges on the way down. A nearby sign sympathises with your predicament:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cBeware of sea urchins! Don\u2019t touch them with your bare hands!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link moves a sea urchin with his shield\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/8cd8c8ec403e2\/link-moves-a-sea-urchin-with-his-shield.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/8cd8c8ec403e2\/link-moves-a-sea-urchin-with-his-shield.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link moves a sea urchin with his shield\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Follow the advice of this helpful sign &#8211; hold your shield with R and push the Urchins to clear a path to the beach \u2013 and your sword.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link hears about the Mysterious Forest\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/e5f263508bd94\/link-hears-about-the-mysterious-forest.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/e5f263508bd94\/link-hears-about-the-mysterious-forest.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link hears about the Mysterious Forest\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Before you can pick up your sword, an owl swoops in with some words of wisdom \u2013 he recommends going north and entering the Mysterious Forest. Pick up the sword (it must be yours, your name is engraved on it!) and head back to the village \u2013 either to continue the quest in part two of our walkthrough, or to start work on the trading sequence below.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-linkrs-awakening-trading-sequence-part-one-n-yoshi-doll-ribbon-dog-food-and-bananas\">The Link\u2019s Awakening Trading Sequence: Part One \u2013 Yoshi Doll, Ribbon, Dog Food and Bananas<\/h2>\n<p>Trading sequences are a recurring element in the Zelda series \u2013 you\u2019ll pick up one item that a character is looking for, trade it and they\u2019ll give you another item, and so on. However, the one in Link\u2019s Awakening is unusual in that it is unavoidable if you plan on actually completing the game.<\/p>\n<p>Because you\u2019ll have to follow these steps sooner rather than later, we\u2019ll guide you through the steps of the trading sequence as they become available to you \u2013 and the first four items are available from the very beginning.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"step-one-getting-the-yoshi-doll\">Step One: Getting the Yoshi Doll<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link hears about the Yoshi Doll\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/5951a5b3e4fc8\/link-hears-about-the-yoshi-doll.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/5951a5b3e4fc8\/link-hears-about-the-yoshi-doll.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link hears about the Yoshi Doll\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>While exploring Mabe Village you will undoubtedly come across the house in the southeast offering the wonderfully named \u2018Trendy Game\u2019 \u2013 a UFO catcher\/claw crane game in which you can win various prizes. Directly outside a kid named Suhni mentions that he has been trying to win the Yoshi Doll in the game, and while you\u2019d be forgiven for feeling like you have bigger windfish to wake, helping him get that doll will serve you well in the long run.<\/p>\n<p>Once you have 30 to 50 Rupees or so (chop some of the nearby grass for some quick cash) head inside and play the game.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link positions the trendy game claw vertically\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/17b735550ff08\/link-positions-the-trendy-game-claw-vertically.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/17b735550ff08\/link-positions-the-trendy-game-claw-vertically.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link positions the trendy game claw vertically\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>The claw crane is 10 rupees a shot \u2013 and not exactly the easiest thing to nail first time. Press X to move the crane forward and A to move it to the right: just like real claw machines, you only get one go at moving the crane in each direction, so if you over\/undershoot you\u2019ll find you\u2019ve wasted a turn.<\/p>\n<p>Press X to move crane forward, try to get the light of the crane as close to the centre of the carpet square as possible (as in the screenshot above).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link positions the trendy game claw horizontally\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/70bd94649fa19\/link-positions-the-trendy-game-claw-horizontally.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/70bd94649fa19\/link-positions-the-trendy-game-claw-horizontally.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link positions the trendy game claw horizontally\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Next, press A to move the crane to the right until the light is directly above the Yoshi Doll\u2019s head \u2013 hopefully you\u2019ll grab the doll, if not, keep trying until you are successful (clear some more grass outside if you need to have another go). You may also want to have a go at grabbing the heart piece<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"step-two-yoshi-doll-for-ribbon\">Step Two: Yoshi Doll for Ribbon<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link is accosted leaving the Trendy Game with his Yoshi Doll\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/075cd8cf189eb\/link-is-accosted-leaving-the-trendy-game-with-his-yoshi-doll.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/075cd8cf189eb\/link-is-accosted-leaving-the-trendy-game-with-his-yoshi-doll.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link is accosted leaving the Trendy Game with his Yoshi Doll\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Step outside with your adorable Yoshi doll for some bad news \u2013 Suhni pounces and asks if you\u2019d like to donate the cute but functionless doll to his mother, Mamasha.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link locates the house with two doorways in Mabe Village\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/e2e9eda7bbdaa\/link-locates-the-house-with-two-doorways-in-mabe-village.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/e2e9eda7bbdaa\/link-locates-the-house-with-two-doorways-in-mabe-village.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link locates the house with two doorways in Mabe Village\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>As the needs of the questline outweigh your legitimate need for plush merchandise, head north to the house which he describes as:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u2018the one up north with the two doors\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link exchanges a Yoshi Doll for a Ribbon\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/c321cc7fcd4d1\/link-exchanges-a-yoshi-doll-for-a-ribbon.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/c321cc7fcd4d1\/link-exchanges-a-yoshi-doll-for-a-ribbon.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link exchanges a Yoshi Doll for a Ribbon\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Inside, Mamasha asks that you trade the Yoshi doll. In return, she\u2019ll give you a ribbon. \u201cMaybe you can trade the ribbon for something else!\u201d muses the game. Maybe indeed.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"step-three-ribbon-for-dog-food\">Step Three: Ribbon for Dog Food<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Ciao Ciao mentions wanting a new accessory\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/021a393d89f23\/ciao-ciao-mentions-wanting-a-new-accessory.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/021a393d89f23\/ciao-ciao-mentions-wanting-a-new-accessory.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Ciao Ciao mentions wanting a new accessory\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>On your travels you may have already come across the CiaoCiao, a very fashion forward Chain Chomp who is after a new accessory. Ciao Ciao can be found in the kennel on the side of the house in the centre of Mabe Village.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link trades the ribbon for a can of dog food\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/3f8d8d57180bb\/link-trades-the-ribbon-for-a-can-of-dog-food.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/3f8d8d57180bb\/link-trades-the-ribbon-for-a-can-of-dog-food.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link trades the ribbon for a can of dog food\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Obviously, the Ribbon you received is the perfect accessory for any spherical giant-toothed metallic horror, so speak to Ciao Ciao, hand it over and receive the Dog Food.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"step-four-dog-food-for-banana\">Step Four: Dog Food for Banana<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Sale mentions that he collects canned food\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/9ce0d10c4b739\/sale-mentions-that-he-collects-canned-food.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/9ce0d10c4b739\/sale-mentions-that-he-collects-canned-food.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Sale mentions that he collects canned food\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>South of Mabe Village, you may have found the banana plantation and the house of Sale the blue alligator. In addition to a sideline in fetching headwear, Sale also mentions that his hobby is collecting rare and unusual Canned Food.<\/p>\n<p>To get to Sale\u2019s house, leave Mabe Village via the south exit and jump down the ledges \u2013 instead of going down the final set of steps to the beach, head east and follow the path (in the Switch version you will notice the ground changing to a yellow\/orange colour when you\u2019re at the right elevation).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture strip\"><a title=\"Link trades dog food for bananas\" href=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/8af64357db852\/link-trades-dog-food-for-bananas.original.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/static.nintendolife.com\/blank.gif\" data-original=\"http:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/8af64357db852\/link-trades-dog-food-for-bananas.900x.jpg\" alt=\"Link trades dog food for bananas\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Bring the Dog Food to Sale and you\u2019ll receive some Bananas in return. Unsurprisingly, you\u2019ll be on the lookout for a monkey to take them of your hands (not the one on the plantation \u2013 he\u2019s just a local jerk), but this is as far as you can go with the trading quest for now.
