{"id":100612,"date":"2019-09-20T18:34:00","date_gmt":"2019-09-20T18:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/350907"},"modified":"2019-09-20T18:34:00","modified_gmt":"2019-09-20T18:34:00","slug":"controls-epic-games-store-exclusivity-initially-cost-epic-10-45-million","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sickgaming.net\/blog\/2019\/09\/20\/controls-epic-games-store-exclusivity-initially-cost-epic-10-45-million\/","title":{"rendered":"Control&#8217;s Epic Games Store exclusivity initially cost Epic $10.45 million"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Digital Bros, the parent company of <em>Control<\/em> publisher 505 Games, listed \u20ac9.49 million (~$10.45 million) in revenue for <em>Control<\/em> ahead of the game\u2019s release, a payment <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ZhugeEX\/status\/1175025884056756225\">spotted by Niko Partners\u2019 Daniel Ahmad<\/a> and one it says relates to the game\u2019s exclusivity agreement with a certain digital marketplace known for chasing exclusivity deals.<\/p>\n<p><em>Control<\/em>, developed by Remedy Games, launched in late August for consoles and, on PC, exclusively on the Epic Games Store.<\/p>\n<p>While some developers on the Epic Games Store have been <a href=\"https:\/\/gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/347880\/Ooblets_devs_break_down_their_Epic_Games_Store_exclusivity_decision.php\">more open than others<\/a> about the terms of whatever exclusivity arrangements they\u2019ve made with Epic, most have been fairly quiet about the specifics to their deals.<\/p>\n<p>For <em>Control<\/em>, neither Remedy nor 505 Games has been particularly forthcoming about the arrangement behind the Epic Games Store launch, so the revenue mentioned in the Digital Bros report represents an insightful (albeit somewhat contextless) look at the inner workings&nbsp;of that arrangement.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalbros.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Digital-Bros-Progetto-di-Bilancio-consolidato-al-30-giugno-2019.pdf\">document<\/a> notes that <em>Control<\/em> brought in \u20ac9.49 million&nbsp;in revenue before June 30, and later on notes in a platform-by-platform breakdown that Epic Games was likewise responsible for \u20ac9.49 million&nbsp;in revenue during that same period.<\/p>\n<p>Remedy itself has previously said (in a quote captured by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamesinsider.biz\/news\/69553\/devcom-2019-budget-for-remedys-control-between-20m-and-30m\/\">PCGamesInsider<\/a>) that the development budget for <em>Control<\/em> fell between \u20ac20 million and \u20ac30 million, so, at face value, the payment from Epic represents a significant chunk of the game\u2019s total budget.<\/p>\n<p>It is worth noting that the actual terms of the agreement between Epic and Digital Bros aren\u2019t laid out in the document, only that the funds were sourced from Epic\u2019s exclusivity agreement.
